Advantages: be a kid again

Disadvantages: toys are clutter

When I was a child toys were something that arrived in small amounts at Birthdays and Christmas, and getting something new was quite an event. I have a December birthday so it was an all at once scenario.

At the risk of sounding old we just didn't have so much stuff!

When I had my children I swore I could make sure toys didn't take over the house, there would be a toy box in the living room and I would make sure they weren't spoilt....hmmm that didn't last long.

Toys today are just so much cheaper, more available and have ceased to be an occassional treat. With the best will in the world they get accumulated from relatives, school fairs and yes Christmas and birthdays.

I can remember every single toy I and my siblings owned in the seventies and into the eighties.

There were the favourite board games; junior scrabble, connect 4, monopoly, operation and my personal favourite downfall. We had some Fisher Price toys; a school, an airport. Someone gave us a second hand dolls' house and some puppets and we had some lego and some outdoor toys and dolls. All of our toys were loved and played with for hours.

So for this generation looking back what will they remember?

Actually when it comes down to it I think children have changed surprisingly little. The old favourites are still the toys they gravitate to the most, here my kids are big on lego and playmobil and I am rediscovering the joy of playing "guess who" and "connect 4", they aren't quite made as well as they used to be, but are just as much fun.

In these days of cutting back perhaps our kids will rediscover the basics - apparently the sales of the more established quality brands like lego and playmobil are up. Perhaps children will learn again to value their toys and play with them more rather than moving from one thing to another.

One thing I wonder though is whether any childhood toy can outdo an old cardboard box as a source of fun, ever. That old adage of playing with the box more than the toys is still true.
I have learnt that having children is the perfect excuse for rediscovering all those toys you used to love so I hope my kids don't grow up too quickly!

Summary: Kids haven't really changed and the old favourite toys are still the best!
