Advantages: I like people
Disadvantages: But not when they send angry emails
///What? Well, this might be the shortest op I've written, but it's been bugging me and I've got to get it out. ///Get what out? I have received a few emails from time to time asking why I rated a certain way. Sometimes people thank me for a nomination, sometimes asking for advice or recommendations where I have low-rated. I like to read people's opinions, as I am a careful consumer and this stuff can be priceless. Some people prefer to write emails however with a different tone. I get the odd email from people with the 'ump. Sometimes it's new users, and sometimes experienced writers who feel that they are above criticism. Either way, I don't pay much attention, but it raises a valid point. ///What valid point? Well, the rating system is made up of four possibilities: Not Useful, Somewhat Useful, Useful and Very Useful. Now, to me an opinion could be beautifully written, with perfect grammar and spelling, but be of no use whatsoever. Sorry about that but if I've read it and it's not useful, I'll rate it 'Not Useful'. It isn't a reflection on writing skill, presentation, word usage, length, or the blooming title. I am saying 'Thank you for taking the time to write this, but to me it was not useful. The point, I suppose, is to be happy that you are getting "reads", and to restrain the impulse to email (angrily) your readers. ///Why do I read about things of which the information may not be useful? There are so many new opinions written on Dooyoo that it is often good fun to read new ones - especially by new people. If I only read ops about products I was particularly interested in then I wouldn't enjoy the site so much. Also it would mean that the majority of my ratings would necessarily be "Useful" or "Very Useful". What then would be the point of that? Finally, any opinion MAY be useful, even if I didn
39;t realise the possibility before reading the op. ///So there's no sure fire route to a "VU"? No. It is a subjective thing, in that a crowned, "VU" opinion might be useless to one or more people. That isn't an insult, and sometimes it is not even a criticism, it is just a response. Well, now I've got it out, I feel a little better. If you've read this (or any of my opinions) then thank you. If you took the time to rate it, then great, and if you posted comments then I am over the moon to read them. Please don't email me if I rate you and you don't like the rating, unless you've got some constructive comments or questions. Finally, I know you're tempted, but it is not ironic to rate this as "VU". Oh go on then.

- 08/02/05 That made me smile as not long after I stared writing here I had a run in with a member who was upset that I hade not rated a review as VU - we agreed to differ in the end! Cheers, Jan

- 26/03/03 I know what you're saying but I think you've misinterpreted the point of the ratings...
Dooyo o is a consumer site and thus aims to provide advice for people making purchases, when you rate a review (even if you don't wish to buy the product) you have to put yourself in the mind set of someone who does. You have to judge the review on its merits in providing the information needed for someone to make an informed choice on whether to buy the product. You mustn't judge it on it's relevance to you otherwise for instance, all the ops I have read on tampons or lipstick I would have to rate as NU! This would obviously be unfair and it would give a distorted view of the usefulness of the opinion for a potential consumer...
BTW thanks very much ofr the kind comments on my latest op much appreciated! |

- 17/10/02 Oooh, haven't we stirred up a hornets nest? Are the people who are low rating this agreing with me or not. Is it possible to rate this in such a way as not to agree with the sentiment expressed? No. If you "NU" me then you're agreing with what I say. The same goes for all three other ratings. Incidentally, thank you for your comments, as they are 72 times more useful than the ratings. It is a shame that dooyoo can only sell quantitative data rather than the qualitative analysis often found in the comments. |
