Advantages: Get there quickly
Disadvantages: Plane crashes
When I was a child I used to love flying. We used to go on holiday once a year and I think I used to look forward to the flying more than the actual holiday. As I got older I must have realised that flying wasn't quite as good as I thought it was and that you could actually die from the experience. There is so many dangers involved in flying, such as terrorists, engine faliure, deep vein thrombosis and a multitude of other mechanical faliures that could go wrong. It is supposed to be safer than being in a car but I can't remember the last time I was hijacked in a car or got deep vein thrombosis from sitting too long in a car. I think the final crunch came for me the last time I went on holiday. Well, it would have to have been the last time I went really. I went to Malta and had a great time. Didn't really enjoy the flight there but it was a means to an end. If I wanted two weeks holiday in the sun then I would have to get on the plane. Four days before I was due to return home and a news bulletin was shown all around the hotel depicting scenes from New York. Yep, you've guessed it. It was September 11th. For the last four days of my holiday we weren't sure if we would be able to fly home or if we would have to make other arrangements. We went through all of our options as to how to get home. Boat, Car and boat, Walk???? Finally we were told that there would be no problems and we could fly home but there might be a bit of a wait at the airport. We didn't have to wait very long but the security checks were tedious but we didn't really care as it was much preferrable to be inconvienienced by a few security checks than to find a hijacker on our flight. It was the horriblist flight I have ever been on. For a start we had a trainee pilot on one of her first actual flights. I realise trainees have to learn somewhere but it would be nice to be asked first if you mind like in a hospital with trainee doctors and nurses, afterall thes
e people are in charge of your lives as well. When we got to Manchester airport we were shocked to see the police and all the security men walking around with what looked like machine guns. Our taxi driver wasn't even allowed to wait for us inside the terminal so we didn't know if he had turned up or not. It was a nightmare and we all needed another holiday. We made it home and now everytime I see a plane in the sky I feel sick, I am just waiting for it to fall out of the sky. I think I will be going by car or boat from now on.

- 13/04/02 obviously some people tend to forget that this is an opinion site. I was putting forward my opinion not asking for little attacks on my thoughts. As to what I was so stressed about. maybe the fact that I don't like flying at all in the first place had something to do with it and the security checks made me worse. I have been on a flight where they nearly had to divert the plane to paris because I was having a severe panic attack. I'm not flying again because i don't think that the state I get into is very fair on the other passengers. |
