It seems de rigeur to rubbish the practice of flying on this site. We sometimes forget, because of September 11th, Lockerbie and Arthur Hailey's Airport films, that flying is the safest and fastest way to get to most overseas destinations.

It's very easy to say, "I hate flying to Los Angeles," but how many people consider the alternative? And it's completely unreasonable to worry about plane crashes, because, while the nightly news revels in covering these grisly occasions, they never report the millions of flights that land without a hitch.

Personally, there are a number of things that I don't like about flying. I can't eat the food, because it disgusts me; I can't sit in the seats, because I am six feet four tall; and the cramped toilets give me a panic attack from claustrophobia. Sitting there in the middle of the night, feeling unwell, and knowing that I still have six hours to go is probably the worst feeling I have ever endured.

Nevertheless, when I have arrived, and look back on the occasion, I consider that I have come a great distance in a short time, and I am thankful that aeroplanes were invented. At least the cabins are pressurised.

If you hear an odd mechanical noise, write it off to being a mystery of the mechanical wonder which is a modern aeroplane. If you think the wings are going to fall off when you hit turbulence, relax in the knowledge that the two wings are actually one big wing, which goes right through the plane.

And if they offer a choice between steak and fish, choose the lasagne.

The stuff up front is pretty bad, too. I always eat before I get on the airplane...that way I can skip the crew meal.

I hardly ever fly, but the thing that I most dislike is the dispicable practice, which has only come in relatively recently, of using partly recycled air in the cabins. It's nasty, cheap, money-grubbing sharp practice, and it's about time it stopped.

I enjoy the flying bit ... it's just the fact that it takes so long to get anywhere and your bum goes to sleep and everyone snores and you have to eat with plastic cutlery and the seat in front always reclines too far back and the in-flight mags are rubbish and it takes too long to get off the other end... apart from that I love it ;)
