Advantages: Button, the Brawns, Disputes, Hamilton, Webber, and now Schumi!
Disadvantages: Absolutely none
From reading around various internet forms I find people are in two minds about Formula 1 this season - it's either the best or the worst season ever. In my opinion it's definitely the best season for over 10 years and with the news that Schumacher is set to return, it just keeps on getting better!
I'll start with a bit of history about my own love of F1. My mum has always been a fan, which she inherited from my Granny - yes it's the women in my family who love it! I have distinct childhood memories of Murray Walker's commentary with names such as Piquet, Senna and Mansell always being reminiscent of the smell of Sunday Roast. I remember my Granny breaking the news of Senna's death when we went to visit her one Sunday afternoon and watching the news coverage with my family.
However, I didn't really get into F1 until I was 16, when in 1995 and 1996 I became an obsessive Hill supporter. In 1997 I transferred my love to Villeneuve. Then strangely, I migrated to Schumacher, although I went off him when he started winning everything. For some reason (probably because F1 became really dull) I stopped watching the sport in my early 20s and didn't really start again until Lewis started winning two years ago.
Anyway, I'm now obsessed with F1 again! As you can probably tell, I'm not particularly loyal to any team, or even driver for that matter, although I like to back the winner. This season I've been supporting Button all the way, although I would love a win for Rubino and was very pleased for Webber. I was ecstatic when Hamilton got his first win of the year on Sunday!
What can I say about 2009? So much has happened since March. We've had the miraculous resurgence of the Honda Team under the guise of Brawn. We've had Jenson Button's seemingly unstoppable early wins. Then there was the double-diffuser-gate, Lewis Hamilton's overtaking-gate, the argument and threatened split between FOTA and the FIA, Donnington vs Silverstone and Max and Bernie's shenanigans. Not to mention sacked drivers, the rise of the Red Bulls, Massa's dreadful accident and the resurgent Maclaren giving Hamilton his first win of the year. And this was before we heard today's new - Schumacher is coming back!!!
I'm now ridiculously excited about what the next race will bring. Will he still be able to cut it, or will he be an embarrassment? My money is on Schumi still being at the top of his game and qualifying somewhere near the top of the grid. Schumacher will be racing Hamilton, something I thought I'd never see. Will he pull a Schumi special and take him out at the first corner? Wow - I never thought the prospect of Schumacher driving for Ferrari would seem so exciting!
So, as you can tell, I'm firmly in the camp that this is the most exciting season for a very long time, possibly ever. I can't believe we'll have to wait for almost 4 weeks for the fun to start again - I suppose the wait will help ratchet up the anticipation to fever pitch! And there's still so much to come. I can't wait!
Summary: This season was exciting - now Schumacher racing for Ferrari again takes it to the max!

- 02/08/09 This season has had some improvements but there have still been too many races where faster cars are stuck behind heavier/slower cars for multiple laps. Hopefully next years changes will address this. |
