Is watching paint dry more interesting? (Formula 1)

Advantages: could be thrilling

Disadvantages: now just dull

I used to be an avid follower of formula 1 and would look forward to Sunday afternoon’s watching hugely powerful cars being manouvered by daredevil drivers racing each other for every position. Nowadays it is very rare that I can bear to watch the tedium of a full grand prix with the same teams winning week in week out and with virtually no overtaking. Often I can only manage the start of the race and maybe the highlights later on. Why is this? It is not down to Murray Walker who I believe should retire, as he is a hindrance rather than asset to the coverage. It is down to the cars and technology currently employed within the sport.

I fully endorse all the safety regulations employed as no one wants to see another person die. But I believe more limits should be introduced to eliminate the gulf between leading teams and the rest. Guidelines such as maximum horsepower on the engines or maximum engines size should be introduced along with a set starting weight for cars on the grid. Whilst this would upset many teams it would not result in the best manufacturers having the best chance (the amount of money spent on testing and aerodynamics and others would see to that). It would result in talented drivers from smaller teams having a more level playing field in which to race and driver skill would become more important rather than machinery.
