Advantages: Absolutely none whatsoever

Disadvantages: Barbaric, inhumane, not at all "sporting"

That would even things up a bit, well, it would if foxes could shoot guns anyway. Then you would have a sport instead of a barbaric ritual that should have been outlawed years ago.

If you read my opinion on vivisection, then you'll realise that I am not an "animal rights loony", but I am most definitely against hunting of any sort.

Yes, before you ask, I am a "towny" but please no patronising rubbish about "not understanding the countryside" I understand enough to know that chasing foxes and stags and any other creature over long distances, to the point of exhaustion, and then allowing a pack of dogs to rip it apart is inhumane and totally unjustified.

I realise that foxes can be pests... but why not just treat them the same as any other pest? when was the last time you saw a "rat hunt" or "roach hunt" with dogs and men dressed in ridiculous red coats?

If a fox comes to you, and finds it's way into your chicken coup, then you kill it, quickly and humanely, by shooting it. You shouldn't have the need to go out and find it and rip it to shreds.

I myself have lived in the city all my life, although all of my immediate family is from the countryside and they are all anti-hunting - as much because of the attitude of those who indulge in this "sport" as for any other reason. They think that they have a divine right to ride over other people's land without asking, and they expect trays of drinks to be brought out to them at the village pub as if it were a right.

Mainly though, they, and I, think it is wrong to chase and kill animals in such an inhumane and totally unnecessary way.

If these people want sport, then let us dress them up in fluffy coats, give them, oooh, five minutes to run away, and chase after them on horses with a pack of blood-thirsty hounds. We'll see how sporting they think hunting is then.

It's high
time this barbaric ritual was outlawed. Thankfully action is now being taken - I just hope that it does not get delayed too badly in the Lords.

I don't agree entirely with ratting either - although I think that a rat probably suffers less than a fox as being a smaller animal it is probably less likely to be attacked by more than one dog and is more likely to be killed with a single nip.

Just curious - what is your take on stag hunting?

I don't think they really do, not in the same form anyway.

"Ta lly-ho old chap! After that rat!" ??? I think not...

What I was getting at is that you do not go and actively seek out other forms of 'vermin', you deal with them when they become a problem, maybe seeking them out after this becomes the case.

I'm not approaching this from the angle that it is wrong to kill cute fluffy animals, I realise that foxes can cause very significant problems for the farming community, and for the ecological balance of the countryside, if the population is allowed to get out of hand.

What I do oppose is the inhumanity of hunting foxes - chasing them to exhaustion and using dogs to rip them to pieces. What possible justification can you have for that?

I haven't read your opinion yet, I will do so shortly, but I feel that I made it perfectly clear in mine why I oppose hunting, and it has nothing to do with 'stupid red jackets', that reference was mainly to emphasise that hunting is a practice of ritualistic killing more than anything else.

Hunters could wear what they liked, it wouldn't make any difference to what hunting actually is, and you know that.

You have just picked upon one minor point... you failed to address any of the wider issues that I mentioned.
