Fox hunting has quite a while been a heated point of argument between those who participate in the hunt and those who seek to protect the foxes and safeguard animal welfare.

The main problem when looking at this argument is that groups on both sides seek to muddy the water, the 'country side alliance' say that this all those who oppose fox-hunting our 'townies' who don't know anything about it.

The fact of the matter is that the debate over fox-hunting has been taken into the wrong direction, it should not be about the 'moral' arguments but about the legal arguments.

The fact is that the state of the UK can decide at anytime that a certain action is illegal, and therefore must seek to prevent its citizens from committing those actions via a prohibition.

When you really look at it, the fox-hunting fraternity do not have to lose jobs via this prohibition, it just means that they would have to modify their actions so as to be within the guidelines set out by any legislation.

They all shout out loudly about how many jobs would be lost, well why would they be lost?
Why can't the hunting groups go into 'drag hunting', it offers the same kind of excitement except that you don't see the mangled body of a fox at the end.

Yet they dismiss that out of hand, and if so, I only have to wonder whether they enjoy not the thrill of the chase...but the spectacle of the capture.

This is not a town vs countryside debate...this is about whether the actions being committed are themselves 'tolerated crimes' already.

I'm pleased to see you've seen through the "town v country" myth (sorry aefra!) - it's just not what I find (I live in Worcs, on the town/country border).

Its definitely not town versus city. I've lived in the country most of my life, been a vegan for most of it, opposed all bloodsports, vivisection, anything which abuses animals. Its not a class war. I disagree that its a legal argument though. It all comes down to suffering. The suffering the fox has to put up with is unbearable. I dont need science to tell me that, its plain common sense.

Interesting new angle. I agree foxhunting should be banned. If a dog attacks another dog, the owner can be prosecuted and the offending dog put down. Funny how that doesn't apply in the case of the fox.
