Born in 1990 in Barcelona, Merida joined his home towns youth team at the age if eight, he was considered quite a talent and left the club in 2005 at the age of 15 with speculation that he had been tapped up by a big club. This proved unfounded and it appears his family simply felt he had no way of developing at Barcelona with such an array of young talent coming through and felt he wasn't receiving the attention his talents deserved.
