Advantages: Clicking that button makes people happy
Disadvantages: Clicking that button makes reinforces bad reviews
Let's make 2010 the year of the Somewhat Useful. Please. I'm asking nicely.
I realise I expressed these views in another discussion topic but, if there is one thing that bothers me about dooyoo more than any other thing, it is over generous rating. I can't tell you how many times in the last few days I have seen reviews that had been given Useful or Very Useful ratings but failed to contain even the most basic information about the product.
I keep seeing reviews for gadgets, games and accessories for games consoles that most people in my family will never have heard of. These reviews then express a few vague opinions on the product with no explanation of what the item actually is. In my opinion, these reviews are only useful to the minority of people that already knows a fair bit about the product. I rate them Somewhat Useful and in certain cases Not Useful. Unfortunately, I'm usually the only one. I try to leave comments explaining why (though, I sometimes forget, I confess) but people do chase me up when they're not happy with my rating. The number one question I get asked by these reviewers? What about everyone else that gave me Very Useful?
What can you say to that? Sloppy reviews are being encouraged and reinforced every day by people that are handing out Very Useful for any scrawl they read. So, let's make the upcoming 2010 the year of the Somewhat Useful. Don't be afraid! Take a review's value for others into account and don't be afraid to be honest!
Before I finish, I'd just like to take a moment to defend the opposite end of this issue. There are a great deal of very good reviews out there that cover the most important information on a product and are getting low ratings because they are short. There are some products for which 150 well considered words are enough.
Summary: Why not get a head start and begin clicking your Somewhat Useful buttons now?

- 08/11/09 I totally agree. You're not alone!. My standard ratings are SU and U, VU is reserved for a review that leaves me with no questions.
A super dooyoo-er messaged some good words to me-enjoy the 1.5p even if they don't rate fairly! |

- 06/08/09 I agree that it is bad for the site for reviews to be over rated, when I am looking for reviews on a topic as a consumer, I like to skim the search results and then I will read the reviews with an overall very useful rating first. I would imagine non dooyoo members doing the same would be surprised at some of the reviews which are apparantly VU these days. I tend to disagree on your 150 word point though, whilst it is certianly possible in theory, I have been around doyoo for three and half years now and it is rare indeed to find a good 150 word review. |

- 06/08/09 I wanted to click not useful for comedic value, but realised it would just come across mean.
Kudos to you for coming out with this. I admit, I'm new, and it seems like an odd thing for me to support this seeing as people have been quite generous with my reviews thus far, but personally I'm an advocate for saying what you believe.
My one disagreement with you on this friend, is that people have different opinions, different needs from what they review and what they read. You clearly seem to value informative opinion and some facts, where others would like to get a general overview of a product. There's no right or wrong there, its preference. Its a tough area to judge really as everyone, as I said, has different needs.
One difficulty I have found is that when someone rates you well, you can't help but feel obliged to return the favour, and that is a something I expect many people feel. I've turned away from a couple of reviews today that I wanted to review highly in return, but couldn't face it because they were not very good, rather than mark them lower, or indeed 'Not useful' I opted to not do anything. I think that might be a good start for people, if you can't bring yourself to rate someones review 'badly', just walk away.
Also, whilst I back you on the '150 well considered words', I also would like to throw out that just because reviews are long, they should not automatically be considered as very useful due to size, and by the same token considered rambling. Some people have a lot to say on a subject, and that depth of feeling, particularly if presented well can be extremely useful.
