Advantages: Find distant cousins and ancestors

Disadvantages: frustrating at times

Although it might sound strange (and I have noticed that there isn't a subject area for this one), one of my biggest hobbies is geneology. I can now bore friends and strangers for hours with my extended family tree and strange stories.

For example, my Uncle Rob is related to a variety of Kings and Barons, both English and Welsh <g>. He's an Aussie.

Finding out about your ancestors is especially easy if you hail from England.

For example, the site www.familysearch.org, which is a free service run by the mormons, has lots of information on births and marriages (and some burials) for England, mostly before about 1850.

www.kindredkonnections.com is an American site which you can get a month free on for uploading a family tree. There is lots of free software which you can download to build a family tree.

www.familytreemaker.com has good message boards for various surnames and areas of the world.

I have researched my family back to my 7th and 8th great grandfathers, and its really fun! Or perhaps I'm just weird.
