Advantages: ease of use, a mass of information

Disadvantages: 5000 results at a time, search parameters could be more versatile

As a relative necomer to genealogy and family history, I have found www.familysearch.org invaluable in the quest for my roots.

The bulk of information is American, but the english info is reliable. The site is run be The church of Jesus Christ and the Latter day saints (mormons) They encompass the International Genealogical Index which holds many thousands of British births, deaths and marriages right upto about 1900.

The big sell for this site to the genealogist is that its free! The search boxes allow to search with at least the Surname, although its better to be more precise as the maximum search results are 5000.

They also allow you to download files in gedcom files (this is a format of file that is read by most family tree programs)

On the whole, if you are starting out researching your family tree and have a few starting points, you've got nothing to lose by searching here.
