Advantages: Opinionated rat - what could be better!
Disadvantages: Can be annoying to some!
I thought I had better enlighten everyone as to why I have used 'Rolandrat' as my screen name - perhaps it seems an odd choice.
---Roland Rat's History---
Roland Rat is a British television puppet character. He was created, operated and voiced by David Claridge.
He had an infant brother called Little Reggie, and had a girlfriend: Glenis the Guinea Pig.
Roland Rat's car 'the Ratmobile' is a bright pink 1953 Ford Anglia.
Roland Rat was introduced to ailing breakfast television network TV-am in 1983 and was generally regarded as its saviour, being described as "the only rat to join a sinking ship".
After a couple of months on TV-am, Roland took the audience from 100,000 to 1.8 million.
In 1985 he transferred to the BBC where he had a number of shows through the late 1980s, most notably Roland Rat the Series, a chat show.
In December 2007 Roland Rat appeared on a puppet special of the Weakest Link hosted by Anne Robinson. (Wikipedia)
---A Rat in the Family---
My eldest son was born in 1984 and for his second Christmas got a blow up Roland as a gift - this did not last long as it burst on top of the rayburn!
However the cuddly toy version was on sale from my catalogue (probably at a reduced price) so I bought that one instead.
Children always seen to fixate on one teddy or doll - and it was this rat that my son took to. We took him everywhere with us - for all our walks and to town (we lost him once in M&S but someone had handed him in) - and I would end up having to carry him. He had his nose smashed off quickly - so I replaced it with a black felt one.
Roland took on a personality of his own, was dragged around by his arms and ended up bursting his seams.
6 years on and son number two arrived - as eldest was outgrowing his toys this rat was taken over by my youngest son - and if possible was loved even more.
Again he went everywhere - even on holiday and to the cinema - where he would sit in the drink's holders.
The lettering wore off his jumper - his hat fell off, all the markings on his eyes wore away - but still he was loved. As son got into Christmas presents Roland would get his own gifts too - sugared mice or a squeaky mouse - we even made a house for him in a sideboard cupboard.
By the end of it I don't think Roland has one seam that I have not redone numerous times - and he has gone through the washing machine countless times.
Hasbro stuff toy - with navy and yellow striped jumper and blue trousers.
Front of jumper has 'Roland at', reverse has 'Super Star'.
Has a black cap and large ears.
Lots of Roland Rat items can still be picked up on Ebay.
There was lots of Roland Rat merchandise.
We picked up his girlfriend Glenys in a boot sale - she had a pink dress and was known to us as Glenys No Knickers' - because, well, she had no knickers!
We had a Roland game similar to Hungry Hippos.
We also have an old single of his record.
Well fast forward 27 years and we still have a very faded and worn Roland in son's room.
For a joke one Christmas I bought one exactly the same from Ebay - but that looked like new - we still have that - but its our dear old Roland that we all love - not the newer smarter version - must be a moral there somewhere!
It isn't that we love Roland at stuff in general - but our Roland Rat in particular.
He is one we would never get rid of - and when sons were small we would have conversations and include him and answer for him - so he really was one of the family.
After years of accompanying us everywhere Roland is now having a well earned rest. However I can see either him or his smarter replacement coming alive again if grand kids turn up.
---Would I Recommend?---
Yes definitely - he's one of the family.
For Rat Fans:
Summary: Cute cuddly rat that is part of the family now.
