Advantages: Day out for the family
Disadvantages: depends on the course
I have now been to York races and Ascot twice (each). York was lovely - plenty of grass for picnics and kids to sit on. Baby changing facilities and a nice atmosphere. Racing was as racing is everywhere, although the access to the paddock areas was easier than Ascot - all on one level. Ascot on the other hand - well - what a dire experience! I went last weekend to a bigish meeting - Diamond Stakes day. The weather was beautiful, unfortunately the people were not. I have never seen so many disgustingly drunk and rude people all in one place. I had a pushchair with me but I felt totally intimidated with cigarettes and bottles everywhere, people pushing past the kids on the terracing, standing in front of them so that they couldn't see, and generally being totally ignorant of everything around them. To say that the racecourse promotes itself as a 'family day out' it far from met any expectations in this regard. I do not have a problem with people drinking or having a good time - far from it - It's just a shame that with the hot weather most of the people seemed to find it necessary to cool themselves down with excessive amounts of alcohol. I shan't be going to Ascot again, and would certainly not recommend it as a family day out. York on the other hand - lovely day out - take the kids - take a picnic and have fun - will go again.

easylife2 - 13/08/01 York, simply far and away the best flat racecourse in Britain and a joy to go to!. I understand your problems with to much alcohol consumption but this is mainly due to commercialism and to the weather. Unfortunately to many people have to get drunk and actually forget what they have gone out for and the rest of us have to put up with it. Have a drink, smoke but always respect others around you! |
