Sports MiscellaneousNewest Review: ... Spain and Argentina at the top of their games being the best teams. In watching all of the football, I wanted to talk about 5 players from emerging footballing cultures who I really rate and believe will make a big difference to their domestic games simply through encouraging kids to be like them: 1) Carlos Vela - Mexico - A wonderful young predator, Vela is on the verge of playing more ... more |

5 best young footballers from emerging nations: I've been watching a lot of football recently and am really excited by the way the game is developing worldwide, watching Australian football it is no longer kick and rush, there is subtlety, variation, players are decision makers, its great seeing the game progress, the same can be said watching the Excellent Egyptian team in last years African Nations cup, playing wonderful passing football with strong tactical nous and teamwork. Russia are an example of another team who from nowhere have really developed a team ethic, filled with individuals but with an incredible collective will to win. My ... Read the complete review

Wrote this little play a while back, around about the time when the London Olympics had just been won and there was all kinds of nonsense being talked by the politicians on all sides about sporting legacy and schools from the same people that took away all of our school playing fields and are relying on the lottery cash to see them through!! I'm a huge fan of all sports, and for those of you of a certain age, maybe you remember the "we are the champions" series with the late great inimitably enthusiastic Ron Pickering, and for me that was a far more innocent time, where sport was really about enjoyment not just money and power plays. Bearing in mind this is just some of them and there is probably a whole load more out there… First of all I decided to try one of these three years ago as I thought I might actually ... The aim of this piece is to talk quite generally about the phenomenon of political correctness. Now, we all know what political correctness is about: avoiding expressions that can be perceived to exclude or insult people who are thought to be socially disadvantaged or discriminated against. On the face of it, this seems like a reasonable guideline of behaviour. But there are problems and it is my intention to expose them. There is one politically correct convention that makes me particularly annoyed, and that is the use of 'him or her' when just 'him' will do. This modern convention makes sentences jittery and unnecessarily lengthy. 'He' is gender neutral; ... Read the complete review

I was discussing with friends a couple of days ago the fact that the news story concerning the missing girl Madeline in Portugal seems to still have legs in the national press which is pretty impressive given the number of days since her disappearence. Admittedly it does not make the front pages so much but I cannot think of a day when the news has not contained some story or other especially on shows like GMTV which seems to provide an update every day usually as either its top or at least top three news story. It is a pretty horrendous story and plays on the heart strings of everyone and I imagine more so for those who have chilren of their own, ... Read the complete review
