Advantages: Good team once
Disadvantages: Bad team now
The once proud team of Benetton have slipped so far down the grid, they are in danger of being lapped before they have started. That is how bad things have got for Briatores outfit. I remember the days when Michael Schumacher won most races with his team mate winning occasionally ( Johnny Herbert). The only serious competition came from Williams and Damon Hill. Maclaren were too busy blowing their Peugeot and then Mercedes powerplants up and Ferarri were so heavy and slow that they were mistaken for Elephants. Then, Formula 1 left the team behind. Maclaren fixed its problems. Ferarri got Schumacher, a lighter, more reliable car and a few race wins. Williams realised change was needed and bit the bullet. Meanwhile, Benetton went on in the theory, "If it aint broke, dont fix it" Trouble was, it was about to break. The engine was very old by the time most people realised at Benetton. No more race wins were coming from an overdeveloped 1998 Spec Renault Customer engine. What they needed was a works deal. Williams now had the BMW deal. The only option was to sell out to the old supplier, Renault. Renault have been off the scene in Formula 1 for 3 years which may as well be an eternity in modern racing. Technological advances had happened that has caused them many headaches. It is going to take a long time to put it right. They claim that aerodynamics are letting them down. There are things in the pipeline. This may be so but it does not make the engine any quicker does it? What it does do is make it better to handle for the drivers. Poor Giancarlo Fischichella seems to jump form bad to worse. Benetton promised him much but delivered little. Jenson Button is learning about life at the back end of the grid. Watching as his car from last year laps him, time and time again. Two good drivers in Sub standard machines will not result in points o
r wins. I think it will be a couple of years before we see the return of Benetton to the podium.
