Advantages: International matches can be fun to watch
Disadvantages: No respect for Referee, Not much done in the way of punishment, Arrogance from players
Football is Britain’s favourite sport, but not mine anymore - well not to watch anyway. I love kicking a football around when I get the chance and I even chose the game for my chosen sport in my P.E. GCSEs. What really annoys me though is watching the game on tele.
The only football matches I might pull myself to watch are international World Cup or Euro cup matches, but even those are pretty awful. In my view, there’s too much cheating in the game. You’re always seeing players faking a fall or just behaving like children. How can you enjoy playing football if you know you are deliberately cheating? How can you feel proud of yourself? Well, I am surprised any 'athlete' can feel proud of themselves if they are the above.
The referee’s job is to make sure rules are not broken, and if they are punishments will be given out. In football referees are too mistreated. If the ref makes one bad decision the whole team are on him like a pack of wolves. There is no respect in football, even for the man who is in the right. I know you will never get rid of cheating and bad behaviour in football but it’s a real shame that it should of happened in the first place.
What footballplayers may not realise is that they are infact idols to children and are not making a good example of sportsmanship. If you’ve managed to watch rugby, or even if you were lucky enough to watch one of the 2003 Rugby World Cup matches you will notice that the referee is the boss, no one messes with him. An example to be made of. But not to forget that like any sport, Rugby also has its problems.
I think that a lot of arrogance is brought into the game by the fact that the players are stupidly over-paid. I think that players feel a sense of importance by their enormous wealth, therefore they are not pleased when they are told what they are doing is wrong. This would explain why they are always arguing with the referee and increasingly, other players.
Not enough is done to punish football players in professional matches. Players are let off easily after committing rather major offences like fighting and abuse. Players who hit out after losing their temper should not just be given red cards but bigger fines and longer match bans, not just 1 or 2 games but maybe even months. Would a policeman put up with it if they saw a fight happening in the street? I don’t think so!
I can understand why tempers are lost during football games as I have been in the situation myself before but there’s really no need for the fighting. You may also notice that referees get cornered (i.e. pushed back) quite a lot, which in my view is a type of bullying and should not be tolerated, not in any sport.
You invite away teams to play at your ground, and when they come they are treated as if they were the royal family! This doesn’t always seem to happen in professional football.
These are problems that are not new as I'm sure they have been going on since the day football was invented! Most footballers are, I’m sure, great people. I'm not knocking them as they are good at what they do, I just think that football is becoming too serious and too many people are getting wound up in it all. It would be nice to see more punishments in the game for players and also for the referee to be made more important and a much more respected person in the game. I noticed on the news that football referees were resigning as they were getting scared of the players as they were being hit by them. These points must be addressed by FIFA as there are many more people like me who are being driven away from the game.
It would be nice to hear your views on football! Thank you very much for reading my review! Sav90
