Ok now I know all of the guys are going to look at this review and think oh my god a girl is writing about football and I also know that you are going to look at my rating of just two stars and think I am going to start nagging about how it takes my boyfriend away from me most of the time. I know that we girls are stereotyped for hating football with a vengeance and the only reason we would ever watch a game is to watch the men running up and down the field and to a large extent that is true. Here I hope to tell you exactly why I have given football two stars and I actually like football.
So the first thing to ask is what is football?
Well football is a sport and not just that but one of the most popular sports over here in Britain. The idea is that there are two teams both with eleven players and a ball. The game is played on a pitch which is a rectangular shape and there is a goal post at opposite ends. The idea of the game is that each team will try and score a goal by kicking the ball into the opposition’s goal posts. The team with the highest score at the end of the game wins. There is a referee on the pitch too to monitor any wrong doings by any of the players.
I know the guys are probably saying well it isn’t as simple as that but to be honest yes it is. There are things such as the offside rules and then penalties but you do not have to completely understand these to enjoy a game. I understood them at one point but you do not have to really because usually the referee spots them for you and it is his judgement at the end of the day that matters. I can hear the guys screaming at me now.
So what sorts of teams are there?
Well if you just type in where you live on an internet search engine and then local football teams, most of the time you will find one. I live here in Birmingham and we have Birmingham City, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Wolves here by us. Most cities and towns have a football team so it is just a small matter of finding the one by you.
As well as all of these teams there are country teams that play against each other so you will get matches between England and France for example so you also get to look at your countries team.
How do I choose which team to support?
Well it was easy for me as I grew up with a whole family supporting Aston Villa so I sort of adopted their views so to speak. The other way you can choose who to support is by looking for premiership teams and see who scores the most goals, who is top etc… or if you really don’t care you can do what my housemates at university did which was to assess which team had the most gorgeous player in and supported that team.
The point of football:
Well premiership football is mainly entertainment and people do really get into it. My guy mates say it is seen as manly which I really am not sure why cause all I see are a load of men in short shorts running around. Quite delicious girls when you look at it like that. Back to the point football is one of the UK’s most popular sports and forgetting about the celebrity aspect of football it is a great sport to play. When I was at school I didn’t have the chance to play as it was a boys game but I am glad to see that now more and more women are enjoying playing it. Even if you think you hate it I would give it a go because it is extremely fun as well as giving you a really good workout.
Back to the celebrity aspect which is your premiership teams, it is a great sport to watch and cheer along. Everybody likes being able to cheer along and support something and football gives you both of these. Football does not go on throughout the year and it does have many championships which is exciting to see your team go through if they get there which I will explain to you next.
Championships:
One of the great things about football is the championships as it is an exciting time for all and really gives you a chance to cheer your team on. Maybe the best championship is the world cup which is actually very imminent as literally the whole country keeps an eye on what’s happening. Even my Mom who hates football likes to see if England win as it is something to be proud of your country for in many people’s eyes. There are other championships between the smaller teams however which usually involves getting to the top of the premiership but right now I cannot think of any names of them apart from the UEFA league if that is right.
Personal verdict on football:
Well I love football and I know that doesn’t come across in my ratings but I will explain to you why. My family are big Aston Villa fans and yes I can hear you all shouting ‘but they are rubbish’ but I really couldn’t care less. I believe that the football team you begin supporting should be supported with the good and the bad and I never say other teams are rubbish as I know that it is just because I support another and the players in every football team are good in their own right.
The reason I support who I do is because they are one of the teams who are close to where I live and I guess I followed on from my Dad. Anyway when I was younger I used to get a season ticket every year to the football and go to every home game and some away. I have been to a lot of football stadiums over the years and my favourite was Wembley which was amazing. When I was sixteen I got myself a Saturday job and had to stop going to the football but I would still go to the occasional mid-week evening match. When I went to university I stopped going altogether as I was away from home and since then my hatred for football has grown because I have had time to think about it.
Do not get me wrong I still love the game and if I get chance to go to a game I will go as I love the whole atmosphere and the anticipation of what is going to happen. The problem is the fans mainly who I cannot stand most of the time. Thinking back to when I used to go to the football and at my youngest I was about ten years old I used to hear the most awful language. Not sure if you all know but I cannot stand any sort of foul language so when I used to hear people shout w*****s and f**k you to people it did register and I was so young. I recently went to a football game and people still do this even when there are very young people right next to them.
My next point is that football does make people violent in cases. To me shouting abusive language is not on and a form of violence and it annoys me that the majority of fans react this way to football. As soon as a little thing goes wrong they start to swear and also so many fight happen between fans of different teams and this annoys me greatly. My friend once got attacked for wearing his football shirt as people did not like who he supported so he actually got punched for it. I know that all fans are not like this but a good proportion is. My final point about fans is that they take the game way too seriously. I mean I know it is nice to see who wins other games so you can follow your team’s progression in the premiership but why do people insist on watching every single game and boring everybody around you.
My next reason football is a bit rubbish is because way too much money is pumped into it and the fact that the players get millions for kicking a ball around is just disgusting. They should pump way more money into worthwhile causes instead of feeding it into activities that are not worthwhile.
In short though I do love the game when I am there as it is exciting and entertaining and fun. I do not go much any more because I get annoyed at the swearing there but to be honest I do miss going.
In conclusion football is a great game and very interesting to watch but the majority of fans and the fact that way too much money is pumped into football just makes me show disrespect to the game and brings it down to two stars in my books. I am just so lucky that I have found a guy who doesn’t like football unless he actually goes to a match just like me.
Ok so there you go, the end. I am just waiting for comments from the guys now to pour in telling me how wrong I am but in the words of many fans before a game ‘bring it on’.
Thanks for reading.
