Advantages: none
Disadvantages: May never play again
Will he ever play football again? That is the question running through arsenal supporter's minds after the horrific injury to striker Eduardo da Silva just 2 minutes into their game against Birmingham on Saturday, in which he suffered a compound fracture to his fibula and an open dislocation of his ankle.
The horror tackle by Birmingham defender Martin Taylor lead to him being sent off, with mixed opinions being set on this decision. Shortly after the game, Arsene Wenger submitted a statement claiming Taylor should never be allowed to play football again... a little harsh because of one bad tackle (he has to live with the images of Eduardo's leg for the rest of his life); Arsene later however retracted this statement.
Football these days is a very dangerous game, with only one harsh or miss-timed tackle possibly leading to some damage made to the opposing player. Boot manufacturers also increase the chance of injury these days with the glorified football boots they manufacture; how does removing such a small amount of weight from the boot make the player any better - surely more time should be made designing the boots to protect the players foot from flying studs or blades.
In the case of Eduardo, it was just simply bad luck. Some people are comparing his injury to former Coventry defender David Busst's against Manchester United in 1996, which ended his footballing career (at one point ran the risk of having his leg amputated). I'm sure Eduardo is now in safe hands, who know exactly what they have to do to get him playing again.
Summary: Horrific Injury
