Advantages: Still one of the most popular sports in the world and a pleasure to watch.
Disadvantages: English ame is being ruined by money and foreign players taking the place of homegrown ones.
Football, one of the most popular sports in the world, and has begun to grasp the USA as well, thanks to the foot work of David Beckham. I am a big football fan and am a keen Newcastle United fan.
I enjoy the sport because not only is it fast paced and skillful, but also packed with tactics and style. It looks superb when a team is playing one touch football, ripping a defence apart to score a well rehearsed goal.
However, as far as the premieship is concerned I can only hope that Newcastle finish between 8th and and 5th. Preferably position 6th or 5th to ensure a European spot. There is no chance that Newcastle or any other team for that matter will get in the top 4 other that Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, and most likely in that order. Money and politics run the game now and the rise in big, foreign players is starting to ruin what used to be a beautiful English game. People say that if you are good enough then you will raise through the ranks at a club, but maybe we would see more English palyers rising through if there was a limit on the amount of foreign players teams where allowed to field. Further to that, unless a club has a very rich and successful owner coming in to buy them, then the amount of successful signings a team will get will be limited.
I still love to watch football, but I want to see more loyalty in the game and the revival of our England team. Not qualifying for the European championships was an embarrasment and all of the English football players involved should be ashamed. I agree that MaClaren did not help much at all, but to put all the blame on to him is unfair. The players themselves have to get involved and want to win the game, rather than win their cheque and boost their celebrity status. I can only think of one player who truely gives it his all everytime he puts on an England shirt and that is Stephen Gerrard. He never lets me down.
Like I have said, we need to see more homegrown talent come through the ranks if England are to dominate.
Summary: A great sport and I will always love football.
