Advantages: Potential
Disadvantages: Lack of performance
There is no doubt that sport plays a colossal role in the everyday lives of a high percentage of English people; whether they be a born and bred sportsperson - where their sport or sports is a matter of life and death and they simply cannot and will not live without it. Or, be it someone who has become totally obsessive about something they should think they should hate and for an absurd reason that they can't explain - it has become their life!
The pressure, the controversy and the knife-edge tension that the English professional sportswomen, but particularly sportsmen experience; makes them heroes when they make the right decision or villains when they make the wrong one! There is no doubt that as an English sportsman you are put under so much intense pressure to perform on a stage where it really matters, that only those people in a mentally and physically fit state will be able to cope with what ensues when representing your country. There is no doubt whatsoever however that the scrutiny put on English sportsmen when they make a mistake or under-perform is far more than any other country in the world!
But really - in general how are English sportsmen coping with the pressures of playing sport at international level? Are we on the up? Or are we on the down? Here is my report on the fortunes of the international football team!
The English football team above any other international team are put under the most pressure and scrutiny. Only the demands on the Italian football team and Indian cricket team come anywhere near what is applied to the English football team! There is no doubt that the English team's fortunes and performances over the last few years have been nothing short of shocking, even tragic! From a position where they were one of the most feared teams in the world, with passionate managers, good quality players and a 'never say die' reputation - the English international game has become a shambles. Having been ranked as the fifth best team in the world in late 2004; England are now in the shoddy position of twelfth, just four years later, behind teams such as Greece and Croatia, with the mighty - Scotland, just two places behind! There are many factors which have contributed to England's downfall in the last few years. Many have questioned what it is. Is it the instability of the England backroom staff and Board Members? Or, is it the fact that there aren't many young English players coming through the ranks to play for their club teams? But, could it possibly be down to the fact that our current players simply aren't up to the standard that they should be? I would think the latter. Not even to qualify for Euro 2008, based on the fact that they were in a group consisting of: Croatia, Russia, Israel, Estonia, Macedonia and Andorra, is an embarrassment to all players involved. From a position where they were one of the most feared teams in the world, with passionate managers, good quality players and a 'never say die' reputation - the English international game has become a shambles. New manager, Fabio Capello; who was installed into the job in early December will have a humungous task in attempting to 'reinstate' almost, the English team to one of the best, if not the best in the world.
So, in conclusion, the England team's performances over the last few years in football have been abysmal. There is definitely hope for the future however, with a new start in the football and some young players coming through in the cricket. There is hope. But, a lot of people need to pull their finger out and show the English public what they really can do. Undoubtedly, there is potential for some of the players in both sports to be recognised as the best in the world; but only those who are mentally stable will really make it to the top and dominate world sport!
Summary: The team has potential and will now get better!

collingwood21 - 06/09/08 I rather suspect that a lot of other countries put these sort of demands and expectations on their players and teams as well - just look at an Italian crowd when their footie team looses! |
