The time is nigh when English teams sit back and reminisce on what could have been after inevitably crashing out of Europe just as the going gets tough. Credit is due, though to Liverpool and Leeds who, after producing sterling performances in at least one of their respective ties, both made it through: to the final of the UEFA cup in the case of Gerard Houllier's men; and to the semi-finals of the Champions' League for David O'Leary's young side. I do, however, have reservations about both their chances in their next game-slightly less so about Liverpool-but Valencia appear to be just too strong and experianced in comparison with a Leeds side who despite a disrupted season, court cases et al., have perhaps formed admirably.

Other teams that fell out at the first knockout hurdle- Man United and Arsenal-just did not have the guile of Liverpool and Leeds. United seemed somewhat subdued whilst Arsenal were always struggling as a result of the goal they conceded at home. They have already laid down plans for next season, though,as both will surely represent Britains Champions League chances again next year. United have gone out and broken the British transfer record and have seemingly not stopped there whilst Arsnal captain to be Patrick Viera has just revealed his intention to see out his contract.

So,with Liverpool still out on two fronts for an unprecedented treble it is hard to say which of the finals will take priority. Alaves are however not to be underestimated, with Jordi Cruyff finally displaying the potential he has threatanded since his Barcelona days and Javi Moreno, untill recently the Spanish Leagues top scorer, having helped contribute to their astonishing thirty-nine goals in European competion this season.Good luck to both English teams
