Advantages: Talent, Youth
Disadvantages: Little Experience
As the Premiership season draws to a close, opinions are being bandied around about who is player, team of the season. Here’s my verdict on the Premiership team of 2000-01. Manager: George Burley (Ipswich) Has performed miracles this season. Taken a team who were many people’s favourites for promotion to the brink of Champions League football on a limited budget. Bought shrewdly. GoalKeeper: Chris Kirkland (Coventry) This may surprise a lot of people who would have expected Fabian Barthez, Nigel Martyn, David James or even Paul Robinson to be no. 1. The reason for this selection is that he has been the one reason Coventry weren’t relegated sooner. Excellent talent and can only get better. Expect him to be the subject of many big money offers now that Coventry have been relegated. Right Back: Stephen Carr (Tottenham Hotspur) Although he has been plagued by injury he has been the outstanding player in this position by a mile. Brilliant defender, with great attacking instincts. Shone even though he has been playing for a very mediocre team. Left Back: Ian Harte (Leeds United) Only regained his place after Christmas but is one of the driving forces behind Leeds Champions League run and Premiership revival. The most accurate dead ball specialist in the Premiership, crossing ability is excellent too. What England would give for a left back of this quality. Centre Back: Sami Hyypia (Liverpool) Along with Henchoz is one of the main reasons for Liverpool’s success. World class defender, great tackler and confident on the ball. Centre Back: Rio Ferdinand (Leeds United) Shaky start after leaving West Ham but has now settled and been transformed from exciting prospect to possibly the best English Defender since Bobby Moore. Cost a lot of money but that seems well worth it now. Midfield: Lee Bowyer (Leeds United) Outstanding
performances week in, week out despite having a courtcase hanging over him. Sooner he is allowed to play for England the better. Has learned a great deal from playing alongside David Batty. Midfield: Roy Keane (Manchester United) Quite simply the best midfielder in the country, and maybe Europe. United just don’t look the same without him in the team. Not much I can say that hasn’t already been said. Midfield: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) Great competition for best midfielder from the likes of Viera, Scholes. Shame he spends a lot of time on the injury list. If he can steer clear of injury he can become one of England’s greatest ever midfielder. Tough tackler, but also has great vision and passing ability. Brilliant allrounder. Midfield: Paul Merson (Aston Villa) Doesn’t posses the dribbling skills of Ryan Giggs but has probably been the most consistent attacking midfielder in the country. Constantly shining for an average Villa side. Has great skill and vision, and gets his fair share of goals. Even though he is 33 he is still sheer class and deserves an England recall on this form. Striker: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (Chelsea) First Chelsea player for around 10 years to hit 20 goals. Power, pace and great finishing. What else do you want from a forward? Shades the forward position just ahead Mark Viduka, a similar striker. Don’t expect him to stay around long though. Has a habit of getting itchy feet. Striker: Marcus Stewart (Ipswich) Currently Premiership’s top scorer. Amazing achievement considering he plays for one of the top flights “smaller” clubs. The clubs who had the chance to sign him before he joined Ipswich must be feeling a bit sick now. The success story of the season. You will notice a lack of Manchester United players even though they walked the Premiership. This is not to do with any hatred of United, I
just it is easy to play well when you are in a team in excellent form. The players I have picked hae shone regardless of how their team has played throughout the season. A lot of people won’t agree with my selections but no doubt you will share your opinions with me

INA your face - 11/05/01 northener: I think that Arsenal's and Man Utd's players have played well this season and I personally would include a couple from each team. I don't necessarily think that all the players from these two teams are better than any other team's but as a general comment I think you're right. |
