Why the hype? (Football in General)

Am I alone? Am I the onle man in the World who can't stand the hype around football?

Has the rest of the civilised World gone insane? I'm beginning to think it's a possibility.

Before I start, I would like to say that I don't hate football. It is a game that requires great skill and amazing amounts of training, and I am disappointed when I miss an England international...

What bothers me the most is the fuss people make about club level football. Some people seem to think it is their one goal on life to love a club. I have met people who were offended when I pointed out it was just a game...

Maybe I have missed something, or maybe I am just keeping my grip on reality a little tighter than most, but football strikes me as being much the same as any other game. Players, very skilled ones at that, competing for a title.

So why exactly do people take it so seriously? I can understand patriotism, and that is just one reason why I love watching England matches, but a club is just that, a club; normally formed speciafically because people enjoy playing the game...

As an example, I give you my brother. He is an avid Manchester United fan. However, if there is football on television, he will watch it, whoever is playing. He is also of the opinion that anyone who can't name facts about a team can't be a real fan. These are the hallmarks of the type of fanaticism that confuses me.

Why people support a club is generally fairly obvious, and I agree there is nothing wrong with that - but how long before people start to realise that there is more to life and that football is just a game?

Personally, I can't wait to Saturday afternoon. I'll be in the pub .... and it will be one with no TV.
