Advantages: Men in shorts

Disadvantages: Men in shorts

My father used to take me to see Crawley town play every saturday. I stood at the side watching avidly as some gorgeous hunk or another in long shorts hoofed th ball from one end of the pitch or the other. Sometimes the ball even made it into one of those netty things called a goal. I never quite understood why I was standing in the freezing cold at the height of winter until one day when a particularly lovely specemin of football manhood came onto the pitch in the form of John Mackie. From that moment I was addicted to watching Crawley play. Now Crawley isn't the most wonderful team but they were in the Premier Beazer Homes League. This then changed to the Dr Martins League. I gradually lost interest as only a 18 year old girl can. Somehow an unobtainable man just wasn't enough anymore. Crawleys playing got so bad that eventually they were at the bottom of the league with a huge battle to stay up. They made it which was good news for my Dad who had then become the nice man who tells you who is playing today.

Then horror of horrors the Council decided that they wanted the land that Crawley played on so they decided to build them a huge stadium. This was a good move for the council but nearly cost Crawley its football team as it now had to pull in a crowd of 1500 to each game when it was lucky to get 700 before. I moved with the team becoming one of those nice girls who you buy your chips and burgers from. But we never had any Bovril!! A huge shock for the Birmingham crowds when they came to visit!

I finally gave up my following when I got a proper boyfriend who would whisk me away at the weekend to nice things like dog shows in draughty barns in the middle of nowhere. Unsurprisingly that didn't last very long but the next guy did and when we finally had a beautiful little boy we moved on to other things and football became part of my past or so I thought. I should have known better.

I have always maintained tha
t a boys love of balls strats at an early age and that they never grow out of it due to some strange cultish belief that they will get old if they give up their love of all things bally!

My son gained his love of balls at around 6 months. He was able to crawl and decided that pushing a ball around was the best thing in the world. As he grew and started to walk pushing became kicking. His Grandad encouraged him so much that one of his first words was "GOALL!!!!" He now only has to see a ball on the telly and he is rivetted as watching Wimbledon last nigth proved. Everytime someone won a point he lifted his arms above his head a cried "GOALLL!!!" He is only 18 months and seems to think that balls are he best thingin the world. He loves having a kick about with his Grandad who is sure he will play for England.

Are all men the same?? I am sure of it. Tehre aren't many who don't like football but if they don't they like rugby, or tennis, or even womens beach volleyball! Anything as long as it has a ball.

Back to the football. Crawley played really well for the first half of last season and looked as though they may go up but htings went wrong. My Dad is sure that they will do better this year and hopefully the pitiful games I remember going to not that long ago will be a thing of the past. However every game I have been to so far has shown them at their worst so I have been asked not to go anymore as I am a bad luck charm.. Well my boy has been a team mascot so I can't ask for anymore can I!

Footbal and mens love of it will always mystify me so I am going to try not think about it. Hopefully I can forget about it for a few years until my little footie star decides that that is what he wants to do andI have to take him to lessons!
