Advantages: Great fun, simple to play, the only equipment you need is a ball and some jumpers
Disadvantages: At least 4 are needed to play
This review is not on football as we all know and love, but instead a football based game I like to play with my friends that I thought I would share with the rest of the world. I'm sure there will be a lot of people familiar with it already, but this is for the benefit of those who aren't. Headers and Volleys is the name of the game, and that is just what it is. To play the game, you need a minimum of four people. Every player starts on a defined number of points, (Let's say 5) and the aim of the game is to reduce someone to zero points. You need one goal, and a 6 yard box. These can all be made with jumpers if you can't find one. One player starts in goal, but to make it fair this person cannot lose any points untill they are out of goal, and a new keeper is in. When you are not in goal you must work with the other players to try and score goals, but you can only score from a header or a volley. Also, you can only volley it from outside the six yard box. Every time you score, the person in goal loses one point. So obviously you want to aim not to be in goal. There are various ways you become the goalkeeper. 1. If you put the ball over or wide you are in goal. 2. If you score and it is not from a header or volley. 3. If you score a volley from inside the six yard line. 4. If the goalkeeper catches the ball before it drops, either from a cross, header volley or anything else, he can say freeze and every player must stop. The keeper must then, from where ever he is standing, throw the ball at one of the other players, and if he hits, that player is in goal. (This can make great rivalrys between players as they constantly aim for each other!!!) Still with me... GOOD. So this continues, untill one player gets down to one point. When you get to one you must choose headers or volleys, and from then on, the only way a goal can be scored against you is with that method be it head or volle
y. There are many variations of what happens to the loser, but the one I play is called "Tannings" In Tannings if you lose the other players take in turns to kick the ball at you as hard as they wish from a pre set distance (10 paces) Each player is allowed a different amount of tannings depending on how many points they finish the game with. If you finish on 5 without losing a point, you get 5 attempts to hit the loser etc. I find this makes it far more exciting because you try much harder not to lose so that you dont get tannings, and there is a fear factor involved which adds more excitement. However you are free to change the game how you wish. Make up your own forfeits for the losers! This game is a really good, simple game and I have tried to explain it as best I could. If you need anything explained better please say so in the comments and I will do my best. Once you get into Headers And Volleys, it is brilliant, and really helps improve your skill in these areas. Thank you for reading, try it!!

anwyl - 05/05/06 Headers and Volleys, or as we used to call it 'Gooma' - A game of kings.
Another slightly more rough end to the game that we used to play would be the much feared "Tunnel of Death!!!"
All the players apart from the loser would form two lines, stand opposite from each other and link arms with the player in front of them - the loser of the game would then have to make their way through the tunnel as fast as they could while all the people forming the tunnel had free reign to kick and jostle the loser - this continues until the loser gets clear at the other end of the tunnel.
You could suffer some bruising but ultimately just harmless fun. Unfortunately I fear the tunnel of death may now be consigned to the history books - I'm not sure it fits into a world requiring eye protection to enjoy a game of conkers. |
