Advantages: Youthful exuberance, Potential, Good Manager
Disadvantages: Inexperience but hopefully that will come with time, Danger of overconfidence, The climatic conditions in Japan
England's 5-1 demolition of Germany in the Olympic Stadium in Munich was sensational and totally unexpected. The goals scored by Michael Owen were of the highest calibre and I thoroughly enjoyed the game and felt proud of my country. This was a night which will be remembered for a long time in English football and rightly so. However, I am amazed at how the press are going overboard and claiming that this England team are a great side and will win the World Cup after a couple of good results. True, Sven Goran Eriksson is doing a marvellous job and we have some very exciting young players in Gerrard, Cole, Owen, Ferdinand and Hargreaves not to mention Beckham and Campbell who are still relatively young. Hopefully, this side will go on to do very well. But we must remain cautious. After all we have only had a few good results and we need to sustain that winning streak. There are a few very good sides in world football who at present are better equiped to win the World Cup. France are an experienced and proven side with quality throughout the team whilst Argentina have a very promising squad. The difference at international level can be very fine and England will need to be on top of their game to do well at the World Cup. I expect England to do well in the next World Cup and would be pleased if we made the Quarter Finals which is a more realistic target. A time for optimism, certainly but let us not get carried away just yet.

CStff - 04/09/01 I agree too, the press are getting carried away. The odds on England winning the WC were slashed to 8/1 after that victory. In reality they are a good young side, but Germany were very poor and have been for the last couple of years, so it is too early to be thinking about the World Cup, I believe that they will win Euro 2004 though, and I might nip down to the bookies for some odds on that. :)
