Advantages: Always something happening, good fun
Disadvantages: Can be a little slow in the test matches
Well it's a sunny Sunday afternoon, and as I look out on the playing field opposite me, what do I see? Cricket!! Now I know alot of people think this is one of the more boring activities known to man! So, is it?
Well cricket has been going for a long long time. I would be here all day explaining the game, but the basic idea is you have eleven players per side. You have bowlers who bowl the ball and batters who hit the ball. So a bowler bowls at the batsman who will try and hit the ball, then he runs between the two sets of wickets to obtain points, known as runs. Or he can hit the ball past the outer boundary rope which gets him four runs or six if it goes over without bouncing! There are many complicated rules but thats the basic idea!
Going back twenty years or more the main form of the game was Test Cricket when it came to international matches. These are five day long games where both teams bat twice. These are still popular and are considered the purest form of the game. But cricket has moved with the times.
In the last twenty years the one day form of the game has become far more popular. Both teams bat twice, usually for fifty overs (overs are 6 balls) each. This tends to be more entertaining as there is more going on and more action in the game. The World Cup is always a big event with all the major teams competing against each other. But again, cricket has moved on!
In the last five years a new form of the game has emerged. Twenty 20. This is twenty overs per side, a real slog-a-thon! These games are really exciting with batters hitting shots every other ball! There are tournaments between the counties and also a world cup for all the major countries. This takes place in June of this year (2009).
England are not a bad side at the moment. Australia have been the major force in international cricket over the past ten years. England are currently about 4th in the world. Although a few years ago they were second! The big event in the international calender is the Ashes. This is where England take on Australia in 5 Test Matches. This summer we play the Ashes in England after loosing a few years back when it was held in Australia. These games are very competitive and great to watch.
Overall I'd have to say I love cricket. I enjoy playing it, and I like watching some of the bigger games. If you don't understand it I can see why it may be boring. But if you learn about the game and give it a chance, I think most people will start to enjoy the game!
Summary: A great game that everyone should try!
