Advantages: Peace of mind
Disadvantages: Costs a bit more
We recently decided to sell our Volvo V70(P reg) as we no longer needed such a big car and it was also very thirsty . Due to the recent reduction in prices we could, for the first time ever, consider buying a brand spanking new car. We looked into importing through the Web and the prices were very attractive - but · It is not easy to sell a relatively expensive second hand car through local advertising. · You only get 1 year’s warranty although it is possible to buy the extra 2 years at a price. · You physically cannot see what you are buying & we were worried about getting the exact specification we wanted. · Dealers are notoriously anti privately imported cars because it threatens their livelihood and consequently bump up the servicing charges. · Dealers are also reluctant to take the car in part exchange when you eventually want to sell it. · We did not want to take any risk with our hard earned money & decided that to have a relationship with a living breathing person was the best course of action. Someone who would be accountable if things went wrong. Our first port of call was naturally a Volvo dealer & we decided on a V40; however, the reception we were given was very cool to say the least and trying to get a decent price for our car out of them was like pulling teeth. I should just say that our car was in very good condition and had only done 37000 miles. Nevertheless, they would not commit to a price as we wanted to wait for a diesel and that meant waiting a few months. We asked if they would like our car there and then and we would buy a runabout until our new car was available. No! Enough was enough and we decided to look at other makes; we settled on the VW Golf but two dealers we went to offered us an insulting amount for our car. However, perseverance paid off in the end – the third main dealer we tried – in Plymouth, offered us a reasonable amount for the Volvo, agreed to take
it straight away and even lent us, FREE OF CHARGE a car for six weeks. It was a smelly old Astra diesel but it did the job & we’re not proud. Today our friendly salesman Nick, delivered our gleaming new car with a full tank of petrol & the smile of a man who had done his job well both for his Company and for his customers. He had certainly given us excellent service from start to finish & although it’s not a British car the salesman is British & I’m glad that he has got his commission . He earned it. Our VW Golf estate is now tucked up for the night in our garage waiting for 6.30 tomorrow morning when we can legally drive it. PLEASE don’t snow!
