Advantages: reveals murky past, peace of mind

Disadvantages: waste of £28 if nothing is shown ?

HPI offer a history check on any vehicle registered in the UK. Give them £28 and the vehicles registration number, they will tell you whether it has a shadey past.

They carry details about any credit owing on the car, first registerd details such as colour etc, any accident damage recorded against the car and whether it has been stolen.

I used this service for a Fiat Uno my mum was going to buy through a family " friend ". Turned out the car had finance owing - so it was still technically the property of the credit company and that it had been written off in it's first year.

Well worth spending the money for peace of mind.

I'm just in the process of looking to buy a car. Checked
out a Nissan Almera the other day, which looked initially
to be fine, but a few things didn't feel right. For example
the V5 form had a different engine size to the car, and
the engine looked a lot more 'lived-in' than the car's age.
Did an AA check (their version of the HPI check) and
found out the car was originally a black GTi, had changed
colour to red, and had been written off at some stage.
Clearly a 'new' 1.4 engine was put in at this written off
stage plus a change of colour. A car to avoid to decided,
saved my buying what could be a troublesome car.
