Advantages: I enjoyed letting off steam!
Disadvantages: Everyone probably hates me now!
~ Do you believe in life after death?
I’m still not overly sure on this one, I like to think that when I die and cremated my body will be scattered to become rainbows, soft winds and fresh rain as well as trees and possibly a hamster. When it comes to ghosts and the like I personally feel that a lot of ghosts are like old recordings of people, after all cassette tapes are just bits of plastic with magnetic stuff on or something along those lines aren’t they? So why can’t people’s emotions and body electricity cause their movements to get recorded in surroundings? Some ghosts I think are people who are only just passed over and a bit lost so they come back to people and places that are important to them, sorry, I don’t have any conveniently practical theory for how they do it!
~ Should smoking be banned in public places?
That really depends both on how you define a public place and also, what sort of public place. I can’t see a problem with people smoking in the street or open park areas as long as they dispose of their fag butts nice and tidily and don’t burn anyone. Obviously public places like libraries are not suited to allowing smoking! I think restaurants should be non-smoking as smoke does tend to overpower the senses and spoils the enjoyment of sensing the smells and flavours of food. Except in McDonalds where there is no pleasure so I think we should all smoke in there all the time!
The one that will get all non-smokers pulling my hair out is that I think that pubs should still allow smoking, and ban kids! Pubs are one of the very few places nowadays that do not need to be politically correct. If there is room it would be nice to have a non smoking bar, but there are so many wine bars, cafes, restaurants, theme bars that poor old curmudgeonly smoking rugrat hating old grumps have almost nowhere to go and be comfortably cantankerous. By the way I am an ex smoker and happily go into smoky pubs so I am not really biased here. (I don’t like sprogs though so I am a tad prejudiced on that score)
~ Is capital punishment wrong? .
Yes. I think that criminals should be made to make some sort reparation to society for their wrong doings. In the case of the criminally insane they should be locked up and the key thrown away. I feel that all convicted criminals should be made to earn their keep.
~ Should cannabis be legalised?
I think it should, as people are smoking it anyway and the current law is very confusing. I gather that it is not illegal to carry a small amount for personal use now. Although since I don’t bother with the stuff I am a bit hazy on the current legal situation!
~ Is beauty only skin deep?
Yes – some of the most beautiful people I have seen are not classically beautiful or cute, but their lovely personalities shine out through their smile and lighted eyes
~ Do animals have rights?
They should, but they don’t seem to. It is strange that in Britain we are so strong on the rights of pets, wit the RSPCA and judges banning people from owning dogs for life and yet our farm animals are often still treated appallingly just because we are going to eat them.
I try to buy free range as much as I can as hate the thought of animals suffering or being pumped full of unnecessary drugs as a ‘precaution’. Plus the bonus is I find free range stuff tastes infinitely better. My eggs I get from a mat at work and the yolks are the most vibrant orange – and the tastiest I have had since childhood
~ Does Britain still need a monarchy?
I think the monarchy should be updated. The fact that a whole family is looked after by the state and our taxes in the 21st century is absurd. I do approve of Prince Charles’ idea of running his estate in an organic manner and selling the produce, although I very much doubt that (even at the prices his biccies are) the money raised covers much of the costs! The tourist value of the Royal Family is rather nice, but in recent years it must have diminished with all the scandals
~ Should fox hunting be banned in England and Wales?
I think it just has been! I despise fox hunting – if people enjoy the thrill of a chase and hunt go drag racing; the beagles seem to enjoy that just as much as pursuing a poor old fox. And don’t give me that twaddle about foxes eating chickens… they are supposed to! I t is like asking a cat not eat a mouse! If they are ruining the farmers’ livelihood so much use a more humane method to protect the livestock. One poor creature begin chased to its death by a whole pack of hounds, humans and horses is just bullying
~ Should Britain join the Euro?
I didn’t used to think so. But having been to Europe recently and used Euros I fund after a few days I stopped converting them back to English pounds and just compared Euro prices between shops. It would make life so much simpler now that cheap travel and lowered barriers and open borders encourage European travel if we all shared a currency.
I am sure that during the conversion the majority of retailers would use the confusion to hike their prices, but that happened back when we converted to decimal money and it soon all settles down. Then we could see just how much more things truly cost here than they do on the continent! Hmmm, maybe that is why the government hasn’t done anything about it yet?
~ Should all firearms be banned for private use?
Yes I think they should – in fact if I had my way all firearms would be banned full stop. If countries wanted to fight and have wars they could use toy soldiers, or pick their biggest chaps to have a wrestling match.
~ What is your opinion on legal prostitution?
I have yet to hear a convincing argument for not legalising prostitution. With decriminalisation the girls could be much safer, healthier and pay taxes. There is no way to stop prostitution; it is not called the oldest profession for no reason. Legalise it – make it safer for all involved
~ Are we living in rip off Britain? .
Compared to what I have learnt of France I have to say yes. We pay high taxes and VAT on so many items and get so little back for it. In France they have high taxes yet their National Health Service is almost as good as our private one. If our country isn’t such a rip-off why do so many people go across the channel on shopping trips?
~ What is your opinion on pornography?
I am not in the least interested in pornography. I do realise that a lot of people enjoy it but I cannot abide the thought of children, violence or animals as part of it. This to me is not pornography – just plain evil. Naked ladies and chaps doing things together or separately I have no problem with!
~ Is genetically modified food right?
Why should anyone want to have anything to do with genetically modified food? Real food tastes so much nicer. I prefer organically grown and free range food and I don’t’ think there is any need for genetically modified food. I am tired of seeing perfectly spherical tomatoes that taste of nothing and until my mum planted lettuces for me this year I had forgotten that lettuce does actually taste of something other than water!
