I reckon the best rallying year was 1999 due to the battles and heatbreak i.e: Dider Auriol, at one point in the season it seamed like Auriol was the biggest challenge to (then 3 times champion) Tommi Makkinen, but with only one win for Auriol and four for Makkinen the title would go down to the wire, nine points seperating them, Auriol needed to win and Makkinen to retire, but it was not to be a good last rally for Toyota, both cars retireing ! title was Makkinen's. The season progressed with great battles from Toyota and Subaru and Colin McRae who got a great start to the season in the new Ford Focus which took him to third in the Monte Carlo rally, later brining him two victories at the Safari Rally and the Rally of Portugal. and a fourth from which resulted in disqualifacation. Toyota's final season would prove to be a good one as the Corrola won the Championship four points ahead of Subaru, Toyota 109 to Subaru's 105.
Peugeot had a great debuet season with the 206, a forth and fifth place for 2000 champion Marcus Gronholme and a close enough victory for Gilles Pinnizi at San Remo rally. The season was one of the most exciting, Juha Kannkunnen, four times champion who had moved from Ford to Subaru, had a brilliant first year with a win at the Argentine rally. So in my opinion the season was the best rally season I have so far witnessed.
