Advantages: Good to watch, Long proud history,

Disadvantages: Lean time recently

I have followed the fortunes of HSV for as long as I can remember (they are the closest league club to where my mum comes from), and they have always been good to watch and like most German teams like to play attacking football with a shoot on sight policy.

In the past they have had such names as Franz Beckenbaur, Kevin Keegan and Manfred Kaltz playing for them, their recent history for the last 10 years or so has been nothing special, but the current crop of players are doing a good job, and they achieved a top three place last season, with their top goalscorers being Tony Yeboah (ex-Leeds) and the goalkeeper Hans-Jorge Butt (no, really). They are currently playing in the Champions League, but apart from a 4-4 draw with Juventus, have not been doing to well.

Hamburger Sport Verein – to give them their full name were formed in 1887, they play their home games at the 61,000 capacity Volkspark Stadion in Hamburg. They play in white shirts, red shorts and blue socks and the club badge is a highly recognisable black and white diamond on a blue background.

They are one of the biggest clubs in German football, and although they have had a lean time lately (their last trophy was the German Cup in 1987) they look as if they could be back to form.

HSV have a proud history and have spent longer in (and have never been relegated from) the top flight in Germany than any other club. The current German league came into being in 1963, before this it was played regionally with the regional champions playing off for the German title. During this period HSV won their regional league on 25 occasions.

HSV’s best period came in the 8 year spell from 1976 to 1983 when in domestic football, they won the German Cup in 1976, the German League title in 1979, 1982 and 1983, as well as being runners-up in 1976, 1980 and 1981. In Europe, they won the Cup Winners cup in 1977 (2-0 win over Anderlecht), the European Cup in 1983 (1-
0 versus Juventus), and were runners-up to Nottingham Forest (losing 0-1) in 1980, and were also runners-up in the 1982 UEFA Cup (losing on aggregate 0-4 to Gothenburg).

Yeah, he scored 9 goals last season. Not bad for someone with such a name. :o)

If i remember correctly it was 9, his record for HSV is 16 goals in 101 apps. not bad for a goalie.
