Ok, now to start with this debate I should mention that I am first and foremost Welsh, so I already have a national anthem that I love and would never want to change. Having said that I am also British and do therefore like the national anthem of God Save the Queen.

Why should we keep it?

First and foremost it has been the anthem for many a year now and out of tradition we should keep it.

I am also quite a fan of the queen, I think that over the years she has been an excellent stateswoman for this country, has no doubt helped in developing relationships with other countries, and through that also brought in wealth to this country. I like the fact that she is our Head of State and think that she does a decent job.

It therefore makes sense that we should sing God Save the Queen out of respect for the fine work she has done and the way that she has helped lead this country by example since she became Queen.

I should mention that I am also a christian and as such I do believe in God and think that it is appropriate for us to sing God save our Queen.

Why should we get rid of it?

OK, now I know some will say that it is outdated, that it does not reflect todays soceity etc and also what does the Queen actually do for us now. Personally I think I have covered those comments above, but would say that the Queen does a good job in this country and deserves the recognition. I think that one thing that America does do so well is the issue that they have a severe pride in their country, their flag and teach American values in the classroom and include singing to the national anthem. How much more pride would our children have in this country - and maybe not cause so much vandelism, etc if they were taught to respect and honour their country?

One thing I would say, is that this should be the British anthem and not just the English one. I would say that at national sports like Rugby I do not like hearing the english singing God save the Queen as this is also an anthem that I agree with, but it should be kept for British sports and not for the English team. Maybe the English could sing Land of Hope and Glory? as an option.

Anyway hope you enjoyed reading this.

Summary: Keep it.

I am not a Brit but I think your monarchy is something to hold onto. The world is so busy changing things that they don't want to preserve history and the Anthem forms part of that very history. So it is a little boring but at world cup level I am pretty sure people still get "goose bumps"

I had to read that twice. Had the wrong glasses on and thought you said the queen was a great saleslady.

Have you ever noticed that the length of a national anthem is inversely proportional to the importance of the nation? Some nations you have never heard of have anthems that go on for ever!

Anyway, Britain has to have its own anthem so that England can have the best anthem in the World!
