Padraig Harrington (25-1 became the first European to win a major since 1999 in the 'Open' last year in that dramatic shootout, matching Paul Laurie's surprise fluke win after that silly Frenchman went walkabout. But Padraigh (Irelands second only ... more

Premium Review Golf Tipster: Goose-stepping to Victory or the Sergio of Garcia?! (1251 words)

The BBC may not have as many premium sporting events these days but The Open is one of them. Four days of brewing drama at a Major golf tournament on TV with a beer in your hand works for me. This year, though, things will be different as there's no Tiger Woods, winner of thee of the last eight Opens of course. The winner of 13 majors has surprisingly decided to have surgery on his ankle mid season, sabotaging two more shots at Majors this year and, of course, the Ryder Cup, the latter not on his Christmas card list. But, being Mr controversial with my opinions, I'm not surprised a few more Americans than normal have pulled out of the Open this week. Its the first time ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Hit the damn thing straight! (2090 words)

Straight Shooting Golf – Dalton McCrary ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Golf, as anyone who has ever played will tell you, is a fiendishly tricky game. When analysed to even the most superficial level, the golf swing is an incredibly complicated and difficult to master action. Golf has also been described as a good walk spoiled by that old curmudgeon Churchill but once you’ve played, more than likely you’ll soon become addicted and few things can beat the satisfaction of a well hit drive. Unfortunately, for most of us those well hit drives streaking down the middle of the fairway are infuriatingly few and far between which is why the market ...  Read the complete review

Golf Tipster: Summer is over, but Goosens is 4-1! (585 words)
by - written on 11/10/01

The summer of sport is over when the last Grand Prix cars zip over the Suzuka finishing line in Japan and the worlds best matchplayer rolls in a put to win the Wentworth championship. But this year the beleaguered yanks and Canadians are a little reticent like their entertainers to make the trip, so a few substitutes have been rounded up to plug the gaps. But the barrel of available talent is not that deep, one can hear the bottom being scraped and creaking bones as Sevy rocks up to do battle with Sam, fag behind the ear Torrance. The jovial ex Ryder Cup captains are expecting decent galleries to follow them around the autumnal London Home Counties golf ...  Read the complete review

Golf Tipster: Duval and Mickleson to tame the Tiger (724 words)
by - written on 03/04/01

The first week of April is spectacularly colorful for sport, with the FA Cup semis and The National. But nothings more sumptuous for action and tension than the US Masters from Augusta. If the BBC lose this event to kick off their summer season then I think it will be adieu for the channel in that department. It’s the gem of their package and you can’t beat it for TV. Clearly Tiger is odds on to be the first guy to hold all four majors by winning in Augusta.Something that will probably never be repeated for a long long time. Its incredible to think that twenty years ago the only black fellows allowed in here were caddies and Hubert ...  Read the complete review
