Advantages: A good time to remeber lost family and friends, fun etc
Disadvantages: Nothing for me
As many of you already know I am Wiccan and so Hallowe’en is fairly important to me. I always enjoyed it as a child in the old bin liner witch’s outfit with a black cardboard hat and a dodgy broom! As an adult it means more to me now and is kind of “new Year” for us Wiccans.
Wiccans call Hallowe’en “Samhain” and it is the festival of the dead. Basically I believe that the veil between our world and the world of the dead is thin and the souls of the departed can return to spend a little time with their loved ones. So instead of being spooky and horrible the festival is really one of remembrance and respect for those who have gone before you.
I love to dress up for Hallowe’en, not for religious purposes I might add but because I like to and I was brought up with the tradition. Needless to say I am usually a Witch but I have been known to be a punk, a pirate and a geisha! This year I will be witch again because I love hats and I get to act like the stereotype witch for a day!
I always make a huge meal for my family and friends and just about anyone who wants some at Hallowe’en. I usually set up a buffet in the morning and add things as the day progresses so people can just help themselves as they want. This year I am baking Hallowe’en biscuits too using some cool cutters I have collected over the years.
I am having friends to stay from Wednesday till Monday and so we will be staying up late, playing board games and watching dodgy Sci-Fi. My Mum will pop round too for some food and a chat.
At some point I will find some time alone and commune with my God and Goddess. This is a simple ritual with some candles, incense and meditation which make me ready for the winter months and prepare me for another year. I will use this time to give thanks for what I have and to lay down goals and wishes for the coming year. I will also remember dead family members and ask that goddess guard their souls.
I hope I will get loads of kids knocking the door because I love to see their costumes and I always over stock on sweets to give them as a treat!
All in all I will be celebrating and enjoying being surrounded by my friends and family.
I hope you all have a great time.
Summary: What I will be doing at Samhain
