Advantages: Improves shaded areas
Disadvantages: none
Hanging baskets can brighten up the outside of your home but if you have a shady area in your garden where you want to hang one you must choose the right plants.
There are quite a few varieties to choose from that thrive in the shade.....especially 'Busy Lizzies' these can be planted in the top of the basket and the trailing variety 'Spellbound' can be put in the sides to give you lovely colourful displays right through the summer.
A really lovely one called 'New Guinea' is perfect to place in the centre it is a lot leafier and the blooms are larger than any other variety.
You don't have to stick to just 'Busy Lizzies' 'Begonias' and 'Hostas'are nice and leafy also ferns can be mixed in to give some contrast.
Some 'Fuchsias' thrive in the shade especially 'Swing Time' these are trailing and bloom to a gorgeous large red and white bloom.
So plenty of choice for a colourful display but don't forget even baskets in shade need watering occasionally.
It is a good idea when preparing the basket that you add water retaining granules these can be bought at any garden centre at a reasonable price I think the last tub I bought cost me 2.99 and I made up six baskets leaving nearly half left for this year. A slow releasing fertilizer mixed in with the compost will help your plants bloom to their full potential.
Choose a liner for your basket that will help to retain the moisture, I know moss looks neat and tidy but it doesn't do much to help in retaining moisture so try cutting up and old woolly jumper, this works a dream you don't have to chop up your multi coloured tank top an old plain coloured one looks best. Plastic lining is good but it does not look as good.
A good way for planting is to stand the basket in a bucket so that you can turn it round and plant into the sides as well without risking it toppling over and damaging the plants.
I hope that this has been of some use to all you budding gardeners, now all we have to wish for is our summer to begin.
