Advantages: Lovely blooming show, Relatively easy even for a beginner, Inexpensive

Disadvantages: You have to water very regularly

When I moved into my new home last October, I was pleased to see that there were some brackets for hanging baskets already on the walls. Although I hadn't planted any hanging baskets before, I was looking forward to the experience. This garden is very low maintainance, no lawn and small beds, so I thought I would make a splash with my baskets instead :-)

I had a fair idea of what to do, but I still read up the best way to plant them, and now summer is hear they have turned out very nicely. I used a selection of small plug plants bought from the garden centre and just mixed and matched and hoped for the best. (I bought ones particularly recommended for baskets - lobelias, petunias and some others I can't remember the name of.) Each basket cost me about a fiver altogether, excluding the cost of the basket itself.

One thing I must say about hanging baskets, for those who are inexperienced as I was, is that it is advisable to add some water retaining crystals to the compost as baskets dry out very quickly. Also, you have to be prepared to put in the time to water them. At present I am watering mine twice a day, and it's not really very hot yet!

Many people use moss to line their baskets, but you can get felt type basket liners specifically made for the job, or even use black plastic (polythene bin liners.)

I am very happy with how my baskets have truned out, but it was more down to luck than judgement! I just 'had a go' and I was fortunate enough to get a lovely show. Therefore I would say to anyone who is a bit hesitant, if I can do it, anyone can.

A good watering once a day seems to do mine, but you really need to soak them. Thanks for the op. Tom
