Advantages: helps new members from becoming churners
Disadvantages: fingers can start to ache fromtyping comments!!
UPDATED – Thank you Alkaliguru and blackjane – see even old members can help old members!!! (see comments!!) Yes I know this category is for tips for new members but I think this opinion is very relevant. Over the past few days I have been rating more than writing and I am appalled at how many somewhat useful ratings are handed out to new members without any form of explanation in the comments box. When I first started on Dooyoo the first opinion I wrote was awful and if it wasn’t for mrtox who wrote the following comments – “Sorry, I see this is the first review you have ever written, sorry about my rather mean rating, but if you want to really know how to get on in the dooyoo community then go to the tips on how to write dooyoo opinions, you will turn a review that makes 20p into £1.60 Check it out, and sorry. Good luck for the future. MrT” I would have still been churning out any old rubbish! You see my point is this – if established members don’t guide new members in the ways of writing opinions they will turn into churners and we all love them don’t we! I have seen a few new members now enthusiastically turning out 75 word opinions and members rating them somewhat useful and leaving it at that. Some members are even adding these new members to their CoF even though the ratings they have given are bad! So my tips are the following: * When you have a poor opinion in front of you, check out the member, go to their profile page to see how many ops they have written etc. Are they new? Are they just a churner? Only then rate the opinion as you see fit. * If they are a new member rate their opinion accordingly and then leave a message in the comment box to say why you have rated their opinion such. Points them in the direction of this category so that they can read the many ops giving tips on writing good ops
. I always quote Scotgirl to new members as she has written a crown worthy op on writing opinions. * So what if the member is a churner? Simply rate them as you see fit – don’t be afraid to use the not useful button – but remember to leave a comment as to why you have rated it such. (don’t be offensive or abusive in your comments it’s just not worth it and isn’t in keeping with community spirit) Then the churners will have a choice – either they start writing good ops or leave. But remember there are people on this site who don’t have degrees in journalism so be a bit lenient with spelling/grammar etc, just point them in the direction of spell checker in Word. Remember the best thing about Dooyoo is the community spirit and to maintain that we need to make new people welcome. These new people in turn will tell other people who will in turn join and at the end of the day that means more reads for all of us! By all means continue to rate SU and NU but please leave an explanation of why you are doing so.

- 18/07/01 I normally comment on an SU or NU but don't always realise if the member's new. Still good op; now we know how Scotgirl's advice ops get so many reads :) Ben |

- 09/07/01 I agree entirely with the sentiment of the op, I always encourage a new member and give them about three opinions grace.
After that, well I am not so nice. |
