Advantages: A true professional, skillfull player

Disadvantages: Needs extra confidence at crucial times

People will undoubtedly be upset with another disappointing performance for Tim Henman at Wimbledon. However, being old enough to have watched Wimbledon for about 25 years, I know that Tim is a class above the rest of the players we have produced in that time.

We English people seem to have the same problem with tennis as we have with football. Because we created the game and have the most prestigious stadium in our country, we believe we should always win.

Let’s look at the real facts. No English Tennis player has won Wimbledon since 1936.
No English Football team has won anything ever except the World Cup in 1966.
AND both of these victories had the benefit of being on home soil!

This is not bad luck, dodgy umpire/referee decisions, or the world being against us. It’s because we are not good enough!

Look at the countries that currently dominate almost every sport: USA, France and Australia. Why? Because they have a much more professional approach to sport. To us, sport is something to do every once in a while, and if you’re good then you go to a class once a week. In these other countries, people train every day from a young age and their whole emphasis is on competing at their chosen sport.

Am I disappointed with Tim Henman? Not at all. He represents the future of UK sport, if only more people could take his professional approach to the game we will have a Wimbledon champion in time. It’s not an easy task, though. Just because we have a player in the top 10 doesn’t mean they will automatically win.

I have great hopes for Tim’s future and wish everyone would get off his back. He is, after all, the only decent player we’ve got!
