Advantages: One-day master

Disadvantages: Can't stay there for long enough

There is no doubting that Graeme Hick is one of the best one-day players England have had. But is he really good enough to get the nod ahead of Thorpe, Vaughen and Maynard in the test side. He has shown on many occasions he is not able to occupy the crease comfortably for his country, but still gets recalled when the likes of Ramprakash fail time and time again.

He is attacking, aggressive, explosive, destructive and can unsettle a team when he plays his natural game - which is effectively to slog the bad balls, and this he does to the highest level possible. In a test match where he'll usually find himself batting within 30 mins of the England innings, can he stick there without losing his head? We'll see in the second test, and I hope I'm wrong so England may have a chance.

I don't decide whether or not to give the man the series - i just give my opinion, and it's not short-sighted at all.

This is a very short-sighted opinion. Hick has been dropped more times than any other player of recent history, but keeps coming back. Since his first unfortunate series against the WI he averages over 50 in test matches agains them, a record to rival any English qualified player. He is a victim of his outstandind success in County Cricket, and is unfairly singled out because he does not produce his record-breaking form in Tests. Give the man this series, and let him play his game!
