High Jump is a great competitive field event. I personally really enjoy high jump because it's an extremely challenging sport and you are always trying to beat your PB (Personal Best). My PB is about 1.75m. To do high jump you'll need the pole to go across, the other two poles either side and the big mat. Then it's simple, you run up to the pole and 'jump'!
To find out which side you should run up to, you'll need to know which your stronger leg to jump off from is. Be aware that if you're right footed then it doesn't necessarily mean that you jump off of your right foot. When you know which of your legs is stronger you choose your side. If you're right footed then you jump from the left side of the mat and vice versa. You run up and jump off of your outside foot and you lift up your knee and twist your body to face away from the mat. When you jump you arch your back and when you hit the mat, roll backwards.
The high jump was first practiced in England in the 19th century. It became an Olympic sport in 1896 for men and in 1928 for women. The rules that were made in 1865 still exist today.
The men's world record of 2.45 meters was set in 1993 by Javier Sotomayor (Cuba). The women's world record of 2.09 meters is held by Stefka Kostadinova.
This is great if you enjoy a bit of competitive play as you can play with friends to see how good they are.
Summary: cool!
