Advantages: good exercise, free, can be fun

Disadvantages: may get wet if it rains

People just don't walk enough these days and it is beginning to affect their health.

Many of the children at the local school get dropped off by car, most of them unnecessarily. I know some parents have to go straight to work but a lot are just too lazy and so are their children. After being cooped up in school all day children need a walk to let off steam especially in winter when they can't play out the same.

We live near a corner shop which lots of people drive to when it is only minutes away.

We try to walk to as many places as possible with our children as it is good for us all and passes the time (how often do you hear "I'm bored). We often play I spy which helps the younger ones learn their letters and spot lots of different interesting things.

A while ago I was without a car and everyone asked how I was managing but I didn't find it a problem as I often walk anyway. We walked down to our local Iceland (half an hour each way) and got our shopping delivered and had a lovely walk into town which took almost an hour but was fun and less stressful than trying to park.

People often complain that kids are lazy these days but think about it and set a good example. If you jump into the car every time you need to go round the corner why would they be any different?

I found in the recent petrol crisis that people were walking more and were much less rushed and altogether more friendly. A lot of kids found walking to school came as a big shock but got used to it. Shame they didn't keep it up when things got back to normal.

Before you jump into the car think about it. Can you walk there instead? If so do it!

If you just walk for 20 minutes each day this gets your cardiovascular system working harder which is good for your heart and will make you fitter if you keep it up. A brisk walk is as good as going for a jog.

I often find, especially in winter when the days are
dark and dismal that a short walk makes me feel so much better and I can then tackle things I couldn't be bothered with before.

People often get in the habit of driving everywhere as it is easier but they are not doing themselves any favours. My husband is one of these and has put on so much weight he has now got into the trap of being unfit because he is overweight but not walking anywhere as he is too overweight to walk comfortably. Hopefully he will read this and see the light.

Ok, I have to admit that my first thought when you made the comment about parents driving their kids to school was that it was too unsafe to let kids walk alone these days. Then I thought, "Ohhhhhhh, you're saying parents could walk WITH their kids to school." Guess I'm one of the people you're talking to (rightfully)! Thanks for a great op. - Christiane

I am regarded as a freak at work as I do not own a car.
