She started as an amazing young talent, winning her first major at the age of 16, but recently has gone off the boil. Two main reasons for this are an ongoing court case, in which she is suing her former shoe manufacturers, for $30 million, as she claimed they have damaged her feet. She has also ... more

Martina Hingis shock loss to Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual in the first round of Wimbledon was the shock of the first day, however I firmly believe that she will be back in the future to add to her collection of five grand slam titles. Born in Kosice, Slovakia on 30 September 1980, however has been brought up and now lives in Switzerland, giving her the nickname 'The Swiss Miss'. Martina is still only 20 years old, yet it seems she has been around forever. She turned pro in 1994 aged 15. Hingis has five grand slam titles to her name, she has won the Australian open three times in 1997,98, and 99, and Wimbledon in 1997 and the US open also in 1997. In ...

Hingis then dominated tennis but she had a couple of exits from big tournaments in early rounds which crushed her ocnfidence, such as her early defeat at Wimbledon. She shouldn't have needed much cheering up, though, after all she was still number one in the world. Lately, though, the Williams sisters have dominated the womens game using their amazing power. I feel sorry for Martina Hingis she is a brilliant player but because she lacks the power she has failed to win a grand slam for two years. As a sixteen year old she exploded on to the tennis scene and won grand slam after grand slam. But now with the emergence of the William sisters and with Davenport, Pearce and Seles already on the scene, Hingis finds it difficult to compete with the big servers. Her game isn’t based on power but on skill and flair. She has a great tennis brain and seems to play like an artist. It’s a pity that Hingis hasn’t got the strength of the Williams sister because I am sure with her range of shots she would ...
