Advantages: Its cheap and environmentally friendly

Disadvantages: Some may be put off by the ingredients

Being a bit of a skinflint (lol) and trying to make 2008 a "save as much money as possible" year I have been searching on the internet for ideas to save money.

I am registered on a money-saving website but that will wait for a separate review lol.

This is my own recipe (tweaked from one I saw online!) for fabric softener and it does work!

Yes it is a bit messy to make it up but in the long run it is much cheaper than the fabric softener that you buy in the supermarkets which would save a lot of money in the long run. And so here it is ....

The ingredients are equal parts vinegar (trust me!) and bicarbonate of soda, double the amount of water and a few drops of essential oils

What I use is an old fabric softener bottle that I have thoroughly rinsed out. I then add the bicarbonate of soda, then the vinegar, and being really careful as the mixture will bubble and fizz. Then I add the water and a few drops of essential oil (I am currently using lavender).

Then I screw the top on and give it a blooming good shake.

When I am doing a wash I shake the bottle before putting it in the machine.

My hubby (bless him) always moans about me using vinegar to clean with, but has not noticed that the fabric softener has vinegar in it because the essential oil masks the smell of the vinegar. And I have noticed that my machine seems cleaner, the clothes seem cleaner and fresher.

And I have saved quite a few pennies in the 2 weeks I have been doing this.

Starting in 2008 I will be looking for more recipes for making my own cleaning products because, as well as saving money, they are also a lot more environmentally friendly and less likely to cause allergic reactions.

Thanks for reading this and happy laundry!!!

Summary: I swear by this = it's fab!!!

Another one is to use half soda crystal powder instead of a full quantity of washing powder.
