Advantages: keep germs at bay
Disadvantages: its not the most pleasent of tasks
I have a slight obsession with cleaning and one place in the house i like to make sure is clean is the loo. My insistance with a clean loo began when i was pregnant with my second and developed a craving for cleaning products. I liked to know that i was killing germs and would buy all sorts of loo cleaning products. Its not everyone's favourite household chore but it is quite an essential one indeed. So i'm going to take you through my toilet cleaning routine.
To clean my loo i use harpic 100% limescale remover, dettol spray and some loo roll.
First of all i make sure that everyone is out of the house, because you just know that as soon as you point the harpic under the rim someone wants to use the loo!! So i normally wait untill the hubby has gone to work and the kids have gone to school.
Second i flush the toilet to leave the bowl watery and flush out any germs and i squirt the harpic under the rim of the toilet and around the bowl. Harpic 100% limescale remover will shift any limescale in your loo and kill the germs lurking behind it. I normally squirt the harpic around the bowl twice to ensure complete coverage of the loo bowl so i don't need to use a brush to disperse the liquid around the bowl. I refuse to use a toilet brush and let it sit there next to the loo idle with all those germs crawling around. I then lower the loo lid and leave the harpic to get on with its job.
Thirdly i spray the cistern, the flush handle and the outside surface of the loo with dettol and use loo roll to wipe around the surface starting from top to bottom. I use loo roll instead of a cloth because cloths jsut harbour germs, whereas with loo roll you just wipe around the surfaces and drop into the loo taking all germs with it. After wiping all surface of the loo i then lower the loo lid and leave for an hour or so.
After an hour i return to finish the job off. I find that the loo bowl is covered in the blue harpic gel and has continued to the bottom of the toilet. Then its a simple flush and your loo should be clean, fresh and germ-free.
I usually repeat his routine every two or three days in addition to wiping the loo surfaces with dettol daily. This gives me piece of mind that the loo hygenically clean.
Thank you for reading my toilet cleaning routine and feel free to leave any comments on you clean your toilet.
Summary: the more you keep on top of cleaning the loo the easier it is.

- 19/06/08 Im puzzled as to why you didnt just review Harpic 100% limescale remover; sadly this category is for hints and tips for household cleaning NOT just toilets, hence the rating.
Person ally I'm a cleaning freak too, but I use vim on toilets as its a lot easier. I never use loo roll because once its wet it starts to tear off and leaves a trail of white around the rim. - more work! Better just to put gloves on and attack either with a flannel or brush for hard to shift stains. And as for keeping everything hygienic? Hot Boil washing machine wash for the flannels you use and steam clean the brush used for the bathroom or just buy a new one! |
