Advantages: Cheap, effective

Disadvantages: May smell like a portion of chips

I am a carpet and upholstery cleaner by trade, and am always looking for ways to improve my cleaning. I recently found out about the marvelous cleaning capabilities of old, common garden vinegar!

Some of you ladies will already know about this and are probably using it in your cleaning. But, for those who don't know about it's power, let me tell you.

Malt vinegar is very cheap. If you have a Lidls where you live, a 500ml bottle is about 14p! It is very handy, not just to put on your chips, but, to clean loads of different things.

Added to a bucket of warm water, it cleans windows like a dream. Apply with a cloth, and wipe dry with a sheet of newspaper, it cleans and removes all smears. Brilliant!

Kettle full of limescale? Empty out all the water, fill about an inch or two with vinegar, and boil. Put a towel under the kettle, as it tends to froth over as it boils. Once boiled, empty out all the gunk, and most, if not all, of the limescale will have gone!

Instead of polish, a litle vinegar in warm water, applied with a cloth will clean even polished surfaces. Buffed up with a duster, superb!

Carpets looking a bit dull and faded? A bowl of warm water and a litle vinegar, wipe over the carpet, it re-vitalises the carpet bringing the colour back. Incidentally, any stubborn stains on the carpet? Clean a potato, cut in half, and rub stain gently with wet end of spud. Juices often disolve stains! Amazing!

Funny how the old home remedies of yesteryear are on their way back as people rediscover the power of all things natural.

I love these old tips. I have a household book from the early 1900's and it is full of this kind of stuck. Excellent :-)

Wine vinegar is better since it is higher in acidity.
