Advantages: Not much really
Disadvantages: Just about everything
Living rough or being homeless as it is known has become an almost ‘common’ thing, if you live in a busy town you will walk past homeless people quite a lot, if you live in a quieter area then it might not be a problem.
The question that always hits me when walking past a ‘homeless’ person should you give them money? My personal answer is I have never given any homeless person any money, the main reason for this is because they can sort themselves out, anyone can get a job, there is always demand for jobs that others do not want, it’s not easy but with some sort of effort it’s not hard to get a job and get your life back on track, the thing that annoys me is you never see a homeless person making any effort to do this.
The main reason that people are homeless is drugs, drinking and smoking. Homeless people often look past the fact that they could try and save up, or use their money they accumulate begging to buy a suit so they could go to a job interview, they only look for today never for tomorrow.
We have all dealt with some sort of addiction at one point in our life, maybe it was a friends or a family members and we all know how hard they are to get over however if you really want to change your life for the better the ‘addiction’ no longer becomes a problem, yes it’s a pest but if you have the will you can do it.
At the end of the day ‘John’ who is on the side of the street is no different to me and you, ok he might have had a ‘harder life’ at parts then me or you, however if ‘beggars’ really wanted to sort their life out then they could.
I heard a fact that if you begged on London streets for 365 days of the year you would earn somewhere around £25,000 a year, where does this money go for beggars, does it go towards a savings account and food, no the reality is it goes towards drugs and booze.
Most of the blame however lies on the government as per usual! If the ‘labour’ (and I use the term openly) government used some of the tax money for shelters then there would not be this problem, people would not be harassed by beggars on the side of the street, to be honest it annoys me because I feel sorry for the people, they should be able to do things for themselves however they don’t, then what really annoys me is they blame it on addiction, as I said before addiction is tough but you can change it.
There is something that annoys me, if somebody has lost everything due to something other then addiction then they get cast into the same group, say I lose my job for personal reasons then I cant afford to pay my rent and I get evicted but I cant get another job and I have nowhere else to go then I automatically get put into a group of people that have lost everything through addiction which is completely different, people walk past me and say ‘oh what a shame,’ however if they knew the reality they might feel different.
The only one thing I would say if you were looking to give something to a homeless person is to give them a sandwich or some type of food because if you give them £2 then they will not spend it on food unless they are so hungry they have no choice.
I hope that this problem is sorted out because it is a growing problem especially with the rise of taxes and the general inflation of house prices, it is now becoming harder for people to keep a place, I hope this problem is solved or starts to clear up very soon.
Summary: There is hope.

tazzywazzy - 03/04/07 i agree with sunmeilan & charluk...it is a bit of a rose tinted view that you have on homelessness, yes they could save up and buy a suit, but what employer would give someone with no address or bank account a job? a lot of the time, people are sick and need support which the government can't provide, there are charities out there which try and help (my friend works for one), but you can't put these people in halfway houses and expect them to pick their lives up, there are all sorts of horrid things that happen in halfway houses, drugs, prostitution etc etc if someone is already sick, why make them suffer that? they probably end up on the streets because it is better for them out there....you really can't just generalise the way you have, some may be on the streets because it is better than where they have come from.. |
