For some reason this is something which in my town I seem to see less and less of, apart from the Big Issue sellers that are present it is not something that is very visible in the town or maybe it is just the fact that I'm not walking in the right areas or the local police and council are proactive in ensuring that the problem remains hidden.

It is a very different picture when I visit the centre of London or Birmingham as their are beggars on a number of streets and tube stations and the signs of people sleeping rough are all around.

I must admit I do not give money to beggars instead preferring to either buy the Big Issue which is an entertaining read or to donate directly to charaties like Shelter.

Certainly there are a number of reasons that people become homeless or seek to get money by begging, for a small minority it may well be a life style choice however this number would be small, for the majority it is either drug or mental problems linked with economic poverty which force them to live such a dangerous existence.

Due to the fact that there are so many different causes then there needs to be a range of solutions to combat the problem and all of these cost money to implement and often initiatives are competing for the same amount of limited funds.

There is no easy solution however it is clear that government must take some sort of action to resolve this.

Summary: Some thoughts on the problem
