Horse Racing in General ... races of Roman times are an early example, as is the contest of the steeds of the god Odin and the giant Hrungnir in Norse mythology. It is often inextricably associated with gambling. The common nickname for horse racing is The Sport of Kings. In the United Kingdom, there are races which involve obstacles (either hurdles or fences) called National Hunt racing and those which are unobstructed races over a given distance (flat racing). The UK has provided many of the sport's greatest ever jockeys, most notably Gordon Richards. In the UK there are rules that stop the jockey using the whip too much, such as: they are not allowed to raise their whip over their shoulder. This stops them hitting the horse too hard. The centrepiece of Ascot’s year, Royal Ascot is the world’s most famous race meeting, steeped in history dating back to 1711. Over 300,000 people make the annual visit to Berkshire during Royal Ascot week, making this Europe’s best-attended race meeting. Many of the visitors know nothing about racing, and are there purely for the social side and to drink large quantities of champagne. This leads to a split among racing fans, some of whom are glad to see racing in the spotlight, and getting more attention, while others do not like the meeting despite the quality of racing. There are 16 Group races on offer, with at least one Group One event on each of the five days. The Ascot Gold Cup is on Ladies' Day on the Thursday. There is over £3,000,000 of prize money on offer.

Have a good drink on the day and sleeping it off in the coach is the best idea-unless, of course, you're the designated driver. Park outside the course and walk in if you can. Premium Review Horse Racing in General: Comply Or Die for the National! (1106 words)

It used to be the cruelest horse race in the world, and very exciting because of that, the horse's welfare the last thing on race goer's and trainers minds, the glory of a national winner everything. Chasers have little stud value and few owners pay for them to sit around in stables once the prize money has stopped. If they don't race point-to-point its Le Big Mac time! But today the National is a proper race and few come to grief now, mainly because they are no longer old cart horses but athletic jumpers ready for the challenge. In the 70s and 80s you would regularly get a 50-1 winner, the race too capricious to be called serious racing, the brave and dumb, jockeys and ...

Premium Review Horse Racing in General: Day at the races? Decide what you want from it first! (455 words)

This isn't really one for regular racegoers. I say this to anyone who has a passing interest in racing but has never been to the track, or to a family who fancy a summer evening meeting and are thinking about taking the kids. Horse racing is, to me, the best sport going; once you get hooked there are so many ways to follow it, so many layers and levels. This isn't just about Racing Post-clutching beer-bellied chaps who file out of Ladbrokes at closing time smelling of cigar smoke. This is a sport worth following, and one you really can enjoy. Thing is, its all too easy to get scared off when you're a new racegoer. Big crowds, types of ...
